The Senior Professional Engineer manages and administers the City’s traffic engineering programs and provides technical leadership for staff engaged in planning, design, construction, and operation of transportation improvements. This position leads long-range and near-term mobility initiatives; develops
and implements standards, ordinances, and procedures; and oversees complex capital improvement and private development projects to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with City, State, and Federal requirements and reports to the Director of Engineering Services.
Must have a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline). Professional Engineer (PE), Texas—in good standing or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Experience: Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible traffic/transportation engineering experience, including three (3) or more years in a lead or supervisory role managing staff and complex projects. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
Preferred: Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work performed in office and construction/site environments; may involve exposure to moving traffic. heavy equipment, extreme weather, chemicals/fumes, and typical construction hazards.

Requires the ability to sit/stand for extended periods; bend/stoop/kneel; and occasionally lift/carry up to 20–50 lbs; frequent keyboarding and field inspections.

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate’s Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor’s Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
