ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Tax Professional to join our team in a dual-capacity role: delivering technically complex individual and business tax returns while serving as a trusted advisor to our small and mid-size business (SMB) clients. This is a senior, client-facing position with significant responsibility and direct impact on firm growth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Tax Preparation & Technical Work
- Prepare and review complex federal and state individual income tax returns (Schedules C, E, F, K-1s)
- Handle multi-entity business returns including S-Corps (1120-S), partnerships (1065), and C-Corps (1120)
- Manage high-complexity returns involving rental income, investment portfolios, stock options, and small business operations
- Research tax issues and apply current tax law accurately and efficiently
- Respond to IRS and state agency notices; assist with audit representation as needed
Client Advisory & Relationship Management
- Serve as a primary point of contact for a portfolio of SMB clients across industries
- Provide proactive year-round tax planning, estimated payment guidance, and strategic advisory
- Conduct client meetings — in person, virtual, or by phone — to review returns and identify planning opportunities
- Advise on business structure, entity selection, and tax-efficient growth strategies for small business owners
- Build and maintain long-term client relationships that drive retention and referrals
Operations & Team
- Utilize the firm's tax preparation and practice management platforms (UltraTax, TaxDome, and related tools)
- Contribute to workflow improvements and internal process documentation
- Mentor junior staff and provide technical guidance during tax season
- Stay current on tax law changes and communicate relevant updates to clients proactively

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- 7+ years of tax preparation and advisory experience
- Proven track record with complex individual and business returns
- Direct SMB client-facing experience
- CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of current federal and Michigan state tax law
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
- Hands-on experience with UltraTax CS or similar professional tax software
- Proficiency with TaxDome or a comparable client portal/CRM platform
- Experience in a public accounting or tax-focused firm
- Familiarity with multi-state tax filings
- Background serving real estate investors, contractors, or medical professionals
- Comfort advising on business formation, succession, and exit planning
