The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks a dynamic and engaging Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) faculty for a part-time, adjunct position at the Clinical Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. About the Position
The Adjunct faculty position provides academic and clinical instructional support to the Doctor of Nursing Practice -Nurse Anesthesia program. Depending on program needs and the faculty member’s expertise, responsibilities may include didactic, simulation, laboratory, clinical, or scholarly-project instruction. Assignments will be determined by the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs in consultation with the Program Administrator/Concentration Coordinator and appropriate course director and/or clinical coordinator. The ideal candidate will demonstrate subject-matter expertise, current knowledge of nurse anesthesia practice, and the ability to facilitate student learning in an academically rigorous doctoral program. The candidate should have a strong commitment to teaching, student success, professional practice, and collaborative engagement with students, faculty, staff, and clinical partners.
Duties:
1. Teaching and student support
a. Conduct didactic, simulation, laboratory, and/or clinical teaching as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs.
b. Provide academic and clinical guidance to students within the scope of the assigned course or clinical responsibilities and refer significant academic, clinical, conduct, or progression concerns to the course director and Program Administrator/Concentration Coordinator.
c. Evaluate student learning and performance using established course objectives, evaluation tools, grading criteria, and program policies, and provide timely, constructive feedback.
d. Maintain appropriate documentation of student attendance, performance, clinical experiences, and evaluation outcomes as required by the program, college, university, and accrediting bodies.
2. Curriculum and course contributions
a. Contribute to student scholarly projects when assigned and appropriately qualified and assist with curriculum and course activities such as course coordination, evaluation materials, and simulation development.
b. Participate in program and course review and revision as requested and within the scope of the adjunct assignment.
c. Review and revise assigned instructional content to reflect program outcomes, the AACN Essentials, applicable COA standards, Tennessee Board of Nursing requirements, current evidence, professional standards, and best practices.
d. Teach graduate nursing courses in the Nurse Anesthesia Program and, when appropriately qualified and assigned, contribute to DNP scholarly-project courses.
e. Apply evidence-based educational practices to curriculum development, teaching, simulation, student evaluation, and clinical instruction.
3. Clinical education
a. Supervise nurse anesthesia students only when assigned, appropriately credentialed, and authorized by the program and clinical site.
b. Collaborate with the Program Administrator/Concentration Coordinator, course director, clinical coordinator, and clinical partners to support student orientation, clinical objectives, schedules, supervision, evaluation, and achievement of required clinical experiences.
c. Promptly report concerns related to student performance, patient safety, supervision, clinical-site quality, or the learning environment through established program channels.
d. Maintain compliance with clinical-site requirements, including credentialing, orientation, health documentation, confidentiality, safety, and other applicable institutional requirements.
e. Support a clinical learning environment that promotes patient safety, professional conduct, respectful communication, student well-being, and progressive development of competence.
4. Program participation and service
a. Participate in the evaluation and ongoing enhancement of the Nurse Anesthesia curriculum as relevant to the faculty member’s assigned responsibilities.
b. Contribute to the goals and strategic priorities of the Nurse Anesthesia Program, College of Nursing, and University within the scope of the adjunct appointment.
c. Attend required program, course, orientation, calibration, and faculty-development meetings related to the adjunct assignment.
d. Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and clinical partners to support interprofessional academic, clinical, simulation, and scholarly opportunities.
e. Maintain professional competence, required licensure and certification, and current knowledge relevant to assigned teaching responsibilities.
f. Complete required university, college, program, and clinical-site training within established timelines.
g. Perform other instructional or program-related duties as assigned by the Program Director Administrator/Concentration Coordinator and consistent with the terms and effort allocation of the adjunct appointment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate (DNP or PhD) in Nursing from an accredited institution at time of appointment.
- Currently licensed as a registered nurse in Tennessee or eligible for licensure through the interstate Nurse Licensure Compact prior to employment.
- Current certification/recertification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) by the NBCRNA.
- 3+ years of experience as a practicing CRNA; Professional experience commensurate with rank.
- Evidence of successful classroom and/or clinical teaching experience.
This position is open to those who qualify and can be appointed as one of the following ranks in the College of Nursing. Rank appointment is dependent on education and qualifications relative to the university and college standards and will be determined by academic leadership in accordance with faculty handbook, policies, and procedures.
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor: This rank is for those who have completed a doctoral degree or terminal degree appropriate to the field or who are licensed or certified to practice the profession where appropriate. Individuals holding this rank have shown promise for excellence in areas of responsibility recorded in the hiring unit’s annual documentation of the NTT faculty workload distribution and responsibilities.
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor: This rank is for those who have completed a doctoral degree or a terminal degree appropriate to the field and who are licensed or certified to practice the profession where appropriate. Individuals holding this rank have demonstrated excellence in areas of responsibility recorded in the hiring unit’s annual documentation of the NTT faculty’s workload distribution and responsibilities.
Adjunct Clinical Professor: This rank is for those who have completed a doctoral degree or a terminal degree appropriate to the field and who are licensed or certified to practice the profession where appropriate. Individuals holding this rank have demonstrated a consistent record of excellence in areas of responsibility recorded in the hiring unit’s annual documentation of the NTT faculty workload distribution and responsibilities.
