Construction Accounting Manager / Full-Charge Bookkeeper

Sweaney, Inc., an established commercial construction subcontractor specializing in painting, drywall, plaster, lath, and metal-stud framing, is seeking an experienced Construction Accounting Manager / Full-Charge Bookkeeper to join our Bakersfield office.
This is a hands-on accounting position for someone who understands construction accounting and can take ownership of day-to-day bookkeeping, job costing, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting. This is not an Office Manager or general administrative position.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Maintain accurate financial records in QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Enter vendor invoices using accurate job and cost-code classifications
- Prepare checks for owner review and approval
- Complete bank and credit-card reconciliations
- Prepare progress billings and customer invoices
- Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding balances
- Maintain accurate job-cost reports and identify discrepancies
- Assist with monthly and year-end closing
- Prepare financial and accounting reports for company ownership
- Coordinate with the company’s outside CPA
- Maintain vendor, subcontractor, insurance, and accounting documentation
- Assist with lien releases, conditional and unconditional waivers, and preliminary-notice tracking
- Support the payroll and administrative team with accounting information when needed
- Help maintain strong internal financial controls and separation of duties
Required qualifications:
- At least five years of bookkeeping or accounting experience
- Strong experience with QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Enterprise
- Demonstrated knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general-ledger accounting
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with limited supervision
- Strong organizational, communication, and follow-through skills
Preferred qualifications:
- Previous accounting experience with a construction company or subcontractor
- Knowledge of construction job costing and progress billing
- Experience with lien releases, preliminary notices, and vendor compliance
- Familiarity with certified payroll and California prevailing-wage projects
