LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 205 Days
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION: Must hold a valid RN License, Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, WV Professional Student Support Certificate (PK-AD) or willing to obtain.
SALARY: State mandated pay scale. Salary based on experience and education and competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
POSITION SUMMARY
The County-Wide School Nurse promotes and protects the health, safety, and educational success of all students by providing professional nursing services throughout the school district. The nurse coordinates comprehensive health services, develops and monitors individualized healthcare plans, supports students with chronic and acute medical conditions, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, and collaborates with school personnel, families, healthcare providers, and community agencies to remove health-related barriers to learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Health Services

Provide direct nursing care for students experiencing illness or injury.

Assess, evaluate, and respond to medical emergencies.

Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and county policy.

Monitor students with chronic health conditions including diabetes, asthma, seizure disorders, severe allergies, cardiac conditions, and other medically complex needs.

Develop, implement, and evaluate Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs).

Perform required health screenings including vision, hearing, scoliosis, dental, and other screenings required by state law.

Monitor communicable diseases and implement disease prevention protocols.
Health Coordination
-
Coordinate healthcare services among schools, physicians, hospitals, health departments, and community agencies.

Serve as the district liaison for student health concerns.

Assist families in accessing healthcare resources.

Coordinate referrals for medical, dental, mental health, and vision services.
Special Education & Student Support
-
Participate as a member of IEP and Section 504 teams.
-
Provide nursing assessments and recommendations related to educational programming.

Develop medical accommodations necessary for student participation in school.

Collaborate with special education staff regarding medically fragile students.
Staff Training

Train school personnel in:

CPR/AED

First Aid

Medication administration

Bloodborne pathogens

EpiPen administration

Diabetic care

Seizure response

Specialized healthcare procedures

Emergency response protocols

Provide annual competency reviews for designated personnel.

Health Promotion

Develop and implement district-wide health initiatives.

Provide health education for students, staff, and families.

Promote wellness, injury prevention, nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.

Assist with emergency preparedness planning and school safety initiatives.
Leadership
-
Serve as a health resource for administrators and school staff.

Assist in developing district health policies and procedures.

Participate in county and state school nurse meetings and professional development.

Support implementation of WVDE school health initiatives.
Additional Duties
-
Travel between multiple schools throughout the county.

Supervise LPN staff.
-
Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
