The Motor Grade Finish Operator performs either rough or fine grade finishing, precisely spreading and mixing materials to dry and prep roads, construct road surface to precise grade specifications, lay cold mix, and/or shave and rip out old road surfaces.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates the grader and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
- Operate a grader to cut/smooth sub-grade on street, highway, & site paving projects
- Ditch & slope work, ripping
- Perform daily pre/post trip checks to maintain equipment
- Operate safely & efficiently in compliance with all company, state, & federal regulations
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment
- Precisely operate grade blade to windrow gravel to the center of the road
- Operate grader controls to regulate height and angle of the grader blade and lower scarifier to loosen packed soil to permit grading
- Drive grader in successive passes over working area, observing reference stakes or hand signals of other workers, to level the surface to the specified grade.
- Feel levers and listen to equipment sounds to determine the depth of the cut
- Finish grade base surface preparation to within half an inch
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years’ experience operating a grader and a heavy equipment
- GPS/Robotics knowledge is preferred
SKILLS / KEY COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
- Thorough understanding of grading/blade control & be able to accurately judge distance as well as read roadway plans/drawings
- Knowledge of motor grader and other heavy equipment
- Ability to understand computerized controls and electronics
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time, climb up/down equipment, and maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site
