POSITION SUMMARY
The Mechanic/Welder is responsible for performing advanced vehicle and equipment maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, fabrication, and welding repairs on company-owned fleet vehicles, trailers, and equipment. This position combines ASE-certified mechanical expertise with welding and fabrication skills to support safe, reliable, and efficient fleet operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
- Perform advanced repairs on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrains.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and repair services.
- Perform welding and fabrication work on vehicles, trailers, equipment frames, piping supports, and related components.
- Operate MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-acetylene welding equipment safely and effectively.
- Fabricate replacement parts, brackets, supports, and custom components as needed.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Perform DOT inspections and ensure fleet compliance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain accurate repair records, maintenance logs, and parts usage documentation.
- Assist with emergency repairs and after-hours breakdown response.
- Maintain welding and fabrication equipment in safe operating condition.
- Follow company safety policies and environmental regulations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A valid driver's license with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
- Knowledge of advanced vehicle diagnostics and repair procedures.
- Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication techniques.
- Ability to safely operate welding, cutting, and fabrication equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 2 years of fleet, diesel, or automotive maintenance experience
- Must have the ability to obtain an ASE Certification within the first year of employment
- Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first year of employment
- Welding certification
- Experience with heavy equipment and utility fleet operations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Heavy- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs. of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and work around vehicles and equipment
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to safely operate welding, fabrication, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Exposure to welding sparks, fumes, heat, grease, and loud noise.
- Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- May require overtime, emergency response, and after-hours work.
- Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and vehicle traffic.
