Job Summary
Join our dynamic team as the Assistant Director of Education, where you'll play a vital role in teaching our marine science education programs. This ENERGETIC leadership position combines hands-on instruction with program management, allowing you to inspire students while helping oversee the day-to-day operations of our summer camps, school programs, community classes, and educational events. Working closely with the Director of Education, you'll help develop and enhance engaging, safe, and enriching learning experiences, mentor and support staff, and ensure every program reflects our mission of fostering curiosity, conservation, and a love for the natural world.
Duties
- Teach and lead a variety of educational programs, including summer camps, field trips, homeschool classes, preschool programs, community events, and outreach programs.
- Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing hands-on marine science lessons and outdoor educational experiences that promote curiosity, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
- Work closely with the Director of Education to develop, improve, and expand educational curriculum and programming.
- Supervise staff, volunteers, and program instructors to ensure high-quality delivery of youth programs.
- Oversee child supervision during activities, ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed at all times.
- Implement classroom management strategies to maintain positive behavior and an inclusive environment for children of diverse backgrounds.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards by maintaining first aid kits, conducting safety drills, and adhering to first aid, CPR, and AED protocols.
- Lead outdoor educational activities including beach explorations, marsh investigations, animal encounters, and other field-based learning experiences.
- Facilitate youth group activities that promote leadership, community engagement, and personal development.
- Assist with recruiting, training, mentoring, and evaluating staff members to build a motivated team committed to exceptional education and childcare.
- Maintain detailed records of program attendance, incident reports, safety checks, curriculum materials, and staff schedules.
- Serve as the lead educator when needed and provide support wherever necessary to ensure programs run smoothly.
Qualifications
- Proven experience teaching children in educational, outdoor education, or childcare settings; camp experience is highly desirable.
- Passion for marine science, environmental education, and hands-on learning.
- Strong classroom management skills combined with knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Certifications such as First Aid, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) operation are required or must be obtained upon hire.
- Background in marine science, environmental science, biology, education, childhood development, or a related field is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team effectively while fostering a positive environment for both staff and students.
- Experience developing or implementing educational curriculum is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage learners of all ages while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and participating in physically active educational programs.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance teaching responsibilities with leadership and administrative duties.
