Registered Nurse (RN) -- Dialysis
Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Dialysis to join our healthcare team for a reputable hospital in Torrance, CA. This is a per diem opportunity for 2, 12-hour night shifts per week or as needed. Qualified candidates MUST have a minimum of 2 years of recent hemodialysis experience.
This role offers the opportunity to provide critical renal care in a dynamic clinical environment, supporting patients through their treatment journeys. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical skills, familiarity with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic and Cerner, and experience in acute and chronic care settings, including dialysis units. A comprehensive understanding of patient assessment, vascular access management, medication administration, and infection control protocols is essential. Candidates with backgrounds in hospital medicine, critical care, or long-term care are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities
- Administer dialysis treatments using aseptic technique and ensure proper functioning of dialysis equipment.
- Monitor vital signs, assess patient condition pre- and post-treatment, and document findings accurately within EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner.
- Manage vascular access sites, including catheter care and troubleshooting complications such as infections or clotting issues.
- Educate patients on dialysis procedures, dietary restrictions, medication regimens, and self-care techniques.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, technicians, social workers, and case managers to develop individualized care plans.
- Perform laboratory specimen collection/processing and interpret diagnostic evaluations relevant to renal health.
- Maintain strict infection control standards and ensure compliance with safety protocols including sterile processing and aseptic techniques.
- Respond promptly to emergencies such as airway management or acute pain episodes; utilize basic life support skills when necessary.
- Participate in discharge planning, patient education sessions, and follow-up care coordination for outpatient or home dialysis patients.
- Adhere to all healthcare regulations including HIPAA privacy laws and documentation requirements for medical records.
Skills
- Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks.
- Extensive knowledge of dialysis procedures, vascular access management (catheterization), IV infusion/insertion, and medication administration specific to renal therapy.
- Strong understanding of physiology related to renal function, fluid balance, electrolyte management, and cardiovascular stability.
- Experience with infection control practices pertinent to sterile processing and infection prevention in dialysis settings.
- Ability to perform physical examinations, vital signs assessment, patient evaluation, and diagnostic evaluation efficiently.
- Skilled in patient education regarding treatment plans, nutrition counseling, and lifestyle modifications for chronic kidney disease management.
- Excellent communication skills for working with diverse patient populations including those with disabilities or complex medical needs such as Alzheimer's or dementia care.
- Critical thinking abilities for triage situations; familiarity with CPT coding for billing purposes is a plus.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team across inpatient or outpatient settings.
