Curious Minds – Pearl District is seeking an experienced Preschool Assistant Teacher to join our team! This is a unique opportunity to join a small, community-centered school in the heart of downtown Portland.
With just 37 children in our entire program and 18 preschoolers each day, Curious Minds – Pearl offers something special: a school where teachers truly know every child and family. Our small size allows our team to build strong relationships, collaborate across classrooms, and create a close-knit community.
Our downtown location also means learning extends well beyond our four walls. Children regularly explore neighborhood parks, take walks through the Pearl, visit Powell’s, experience community events, and learn to confidently navigate their city. We’re looking for an assistant teacher who is excited to be hands-on, engaged, and active alongside our children!
As a Preschool Assistant Teacher, you’ll work closely with an experienced Lead Teacher and our school director to create a classroom that balances play, exploration, strong routines, and intentional preparation for kindergarten.
Your day will include:
- Supporting morning meetings, circle times, small groups, and classroom activities
- Engaging with children during play and helping extend their learning
- Helping set up process art, sensory, dramatic play, and hands-on experiences
- Supporting children with independence, friendships, emotional regulation, and classroom routines
- Using positive, consistent behavior guidance
- Providing strong active supervision both in the classroom and on neighborhood walks
- Collaborating closely with your Lead Teacher and school team
- Building warm, professional relationships with children and families
- Helping maintain a clean, organized, safe, and engaging classroom
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with young children in a preschool or childcare setting preferred
- Enrolled in Oregon’s Central Background Registry
- Strong active supervision and communication skills
- Reliable, collaborative, and comfortable taking direction from a Lead Teacher
- Confident supporting classroom routines and behavior expectations
- Comfortable supervising children on frequent neighborhood walks and outdoor adventures
- Excited to learn, contribute ideas, and grow as an early childhood educator
This is a great opportunity for someone who loves working directly with children, enjoys being part of a collaborative teaching team, and wants to grow their skills in early childhood education.
