Legacy Funeral Homes is a compassionate and family-focused funeral service provider committed to honoring every life with dignity and care. We are seeking a responsible, dependable, and respectful individual to join our team as a First Responder.
Provides support to funeral home and crematory staff as directed. Responsible for the removal, care, and transportation of deceased. Reliably drives and maintains a variety of company vehicles. Helps with facility maintenance and upkeep. Position is full-time, 8 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday. Saturdays and Sundays may be required on an at-need basis. Removal bonus opportunities available as well. This position plays a critical role in the first step of providing exceptional care to families during their time of loss
Job Responsibilities:
- Responds for the removal of decedents at place of death, medical examiner office, or other location.
- Cooperates with first responders, medical examiners, hospital, or nursing home staff to accommodate their processes and procedures.
- Verifies proper identification of deceased, and collection of any paperwork and personal effect.
- For in-home removals, displays courteous and professional interactions with bereaved families, and transports decedent to the funeral homes or appropriate facility.
- Vehicle upkeep includes fueling, stocking personal protective equipment and removal supplies, regularly washing, vacuuming, and detailing vehicles.
- Assists with casket preparation and transportation to appropriate facilities (i.e., funeral home, airport, or other location).
- Runs errands such as picking up or dropping off supplies, or documentation.
- Helps with preparation of remains including dressing, lifting, and casketing of deceased.
- Assists directors with preparation of deceased
- Prepares chapel for services including cleaning chapel, the arrangement of chairs, caskets, urns, or other display items as directed.
- Assists Funeral Director at services as needed
- Assist funeral directors with preparing decedents for visitation, viewing, and funeral services, including dressing, casketing, cosmetology assistance, and placement of personal items.
- Assist with transfers of decedents between funeral home locations, crematories, cemeteries, hospitals, residences, and other facilities as directed.
- Prepare chapels, visitation rooms, reception areas, and graveside service equipment before and after services.
- Set up and remove flowers, memorial displays, register books, photographs, tribute items, audio/visual equipment, and other service-related materials.
- Assist funeral directors during visitations, funerals, memorial services, witness cremations, and graveside services.
- Maintain cleanliness and professional appearance of funeral home facilities, including chapels, arrangement offices, preparation areas, vehicles, parking lots, sidewalks, entrances, and exterior grounds.
- Perform light facility maintenance tasks, including stocking supplies, organizing inventory, minor repairs, snow removal, trash removal, and general housekeeping.
- Clean, fuel, inspect, and maintain funeral home vehicles, including removal vehicles, vans, hearses, and service vehicles.
- Assist with receiving, organizing, and stocking merchandise, urns, caskets, memorial products, and other funeral home supplies.
- Support crematory and preparation room operations as assigned and permitted by training, policy, and applicable regulations.
- Ensure all equipment, supplies, and service areas are properly prepared and ready for daily operations.
- Provide compassionate, professional, and respectful interactions with families, visitors, clergy, cemeteries, healthcare facilities, and community partners.
- Follow all safety procedures, chain-of-custody requirements, infection control standards, and company policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support funeral home operations and family service needs.
- Serve as a Funeral Attendant for visitations, funerals, memorial services, receptions, and graveside services, assisting funeral directors with service preparation, family and guest assistance, facility setup and cleanup, and ensuring a professional and compassionate experience for all attendees.
- If hired, employee must be willing to remove piercings and/or cover tattoos while working.
- Must wear professional dress
Minimum Requirements:
Education – High school Diploma or Equivalent
Licensing – Valid Alaska state driver’s license with copy of driving record - license must be valid and driving record clean
Knowledge Kills and Abilities:
- Strong organization, prioritization, and communication skills.
- Competently driving safely in all Alaskan weather conditions in all seasons.
- Displays compassion and integrity.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Able bodied
- Proficient lifting 100 lbs frequently, pushing or pulling up to 350 lbs occasionally
- You may be exposed to traumatic scenes and unpleasant odors
