Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Maintenance Supervisor to supervise and oversee field personnel in the performance of supporting the growing number of permitted and non-permitted special event demands associated with the City’s year-round event-driven schedule, requiring temporary traffic control devices and staffing. This dedicated position will also oversee field personnel responding to planned and emergency temporary traffic control work zones. This position may be required to supervise crews in the installation, maintenance, and repair of highway traffic signs and roadway pavement markings, as well as supervise the fabrication of highway traffic signs.
The maintenance supervisor should also:
Have knowledge and background in the planning of special event activities, traffic control, and work zone area protection implementation.
Have experience estimating costs for materials and equipment for work crews.
Ensure that scheduled work is completed promptly.
Provide direction, guidance, and assistance to work for crews as required for a complete and efficient work effort
In the absence of the Assistant Superintendent, provide supervision to employees in the Traffic Operations Bureau.
Have experience with work management databases
Assist in the formulation and implementation of training and vocational studies for employees from various levels of education and experience to improve the knowledge and ability of the workforce and assist in formulating and implementing employee safety training programs and procedures to alleviate occupational hazards and remain within guidelines set forth by OSHA.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

CDL Hiring Bonus –
Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
$1,000 with first paycheck
$1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
$2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
This position is ALPHA I and will be required to work during all inclement weather (snow, hurricanes, flooding, etc..)

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: High school or GED, plus three (3) years’ experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as maintenance, repair, or construction work in such positions as Motor Equipment Operator, Traffic Signs and Marking Mechanic, or Construction Superintendent. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
