Job Overview
San Diego Car Sales is looking for a dependable, hardworking, and hands-on Lot Porter / Lot Attendant to help with the daily operation of our dealership.
This is an active position that combines lot organization, vehicle transportation, vehicle cleaning, basic vehicle work, and general dealership support. You will work closely with our sales and management team to keep vehicles organized, presentable, functional, and ready for customers.
Responsibilities
Lot & Vehicle Management
- Keep the dealership lot clean, organized, and presentable throughout the day.
- Move and park vehicles safely around the dealership.
- Arrange vehicles according to the dealership's lot organization.
- Make sure vehicles are properly locked and keys are returned to their assigned location.
- Prepare and stage vehicles for customer appointments and test drives.
- Bring vehicles to the front of the dealership when requested by the sales team.
- Wash and clean vehicles as needed.
- Check vehicles for low tires, warning lights, dead batteries, visible damage, and other basic issues and report them to management.
- Jump-start vehicles and assist with other basic vehicle needs.
- Help receive vehicles arriving from auctions, transporters, trade-ins, or other locations.
- Inspect arriving vehicles for visible damage and immediately report concerns.
- Assist with vehicle preparation for photos and online listings.
- Install or remove dealer plates, window stickers, Buyer Guides, and other dealership materials.
- Keep vehicle keys organized and accounted for.
Vehicle Transportation
- Pick up and drop off vehicles at auctions, service facilities, body shops, smog stations, detail shops, and other locations as assigned.
- Drive dealership vehicles between different locations when needed.
- Assist with receiving and releasing vehicles to transporters.
- Verify the correct vehicle is being picked up or delivered and report any visible damage or issues.
- Handle dealership vehicles carefully and follow all traffic and safety rules while driving.
Basic Vehicle Work
The position includes basic hands-on vehicle work. The Lot Porter is not expected to perform major mechanical repairs but should be comfortable performing minor installations, replacements, testing, and maintenance tasks when trained or instructed.
Tasks may include:
- Install or remove GPS tracking devices.
- Replace basic parts such as door lock actuators, master window switches, bulbs, batteries, and similar components.
- Test vehicle batteries and charging systems using basic testing equipment.
- Remove and replace batteries when needed.
- Add refrigerant to A/C systems when appropriate and when properly trained.
- Check and adjust tire pressure.
- Replace windshield wipers.
- Install license plate brackets and other minor vehicle accessories.
- Perform other minor parts installation or replacement within the employee's ability and training.
- Identify and report mechanical, electrical, cosmetic, or safety concerns to management.
- Assist management or outside technicians with basic vehicle-related tasks when requested.
Employees should not perform repairs or procedures they have not been trained or authorized to perform.
Dealership & Property Support
- Move marketing banners, flags, signs, and other promotional materials into position at opening and bring them back in as required.
- Help maintain the exterior appearance of the dealership.
- Keep parking areas and vehicle display areas free of trash and unnecessary items.
- Help maintain organization of dealership supplies and vehicle-related equipment.
- Assist with receiving parts and dealership deliveries.
- Help with general cleaning and organization when needed.
- Perform other reasonable dealership support duties assigned by management.
Requirements
- Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must successfully clear the required background screening before starting employment.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be fluent in English.
- Spanish is a plus but is not required.
- Must be comfortable driving and parking different types and sizes of vehicles, including trucks and SUVs.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to follow a work schedule.
- Must be able to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks without constant supervision.
- Must handle customer and dealership vehicles carefully.
- Basic knowledge of vehicles, tools, and minor automotive repairs is strongly preferred.
- Must be comfortable using basic hand tools and vehicle testing equipment.
- Dealership, detailing, automotive, transportation, or similar experience is preferred but not required.
Physical & Working Conditions
This is a physically active, primarily outdoor position. The employee must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently enter and exit vehicles.
- Bend, reach, kneel, crouch, push, pull, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
- Lift and carry vehicle parts, batteries, supplies, equipment, and other reasonably heavy items.
- Perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
- Work outdoors during hot, cold, windy, rainy, dusty, or otherwise uncomfortable weather conditions.
- Safely perform assigned duties under typical dealership lot conditions.
Schedule
- Full-time position.
- Daytime schedule.
- Weekend availability is required.
- Schedule may vary based on dealership needs.

Compensation Ranges from $16.90 to $22.00 per hour depending on experience.
What Matters in This Role
We are looking for someone who takes responsibility for the condition and organization of the lot.
Vehicles should be clean, properly parked, locked, and ready for customers. Keys should be where they belong. Banners and signs should be handled on time. When a vehicle needs to be moved, picked up, cleaned, tested, or prepared, we expect the person in this position to take care of the task safely and report any problems.
You do not need to be a professional mechanic. However, you should be comfortable around vehicles, willing to learn basic vehicle work, and able to use your hands to solve simple problems.
Reliability, safety, care when handling vehicles, and a strong work ethic are important for this position.
