Job Purpose:
Under general supervision performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, drainages, sidewalks, and related public works facilities; painting of traffic markings and fabrication of traffic and street signs; and to operate light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment.

Essential Functions:
Knowledge of:
- Cleans and removes debris from streets, drains, drainage ditches, sidewalks, culverts and street construction sites by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
- Breaks up pavements, digs holes, cuts trenches, excavates and fills in holes in streets and other paved surfaces, using sledgehammer, shovel, pick, spade, rake, hoe, hand tools or jackhammer.
- Patches and paves streets and other paved surfaces.
- Loads, transports, and unloads construction equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to street maintenance, using appropriately sized vehicle and/or tractor with mower, loader, or backhoe attachments.
- Prepares surfaces for paving, patching, or repair/reconstruction of streets, curbs, and similar public works facilities.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces street signs, end barriers, or other related objects.
- Operates hand tools, mixing, applying, leveling or otherwise finishing concrete, asphalt or other such material to repair, replace, or reconstruct broken pavement.
- Paints traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, curbs, using stencils, legends, striping and taping equipment.
- Fabricates, installs, and repairs traffic/street signs and removes those no longer needed.
- Learns to operate small, medium, and large trucks as assigned.
- Sets up traffic control and directs traffic around work sites.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles as necessary.
- Performs related duties as well as any other duties assigned.
- Basic techniques and methods used in construction, repair, and maintenance of public streets and related facilities.
- General use, purpose, and care of tools and equipment used in field maintenance and construction work.
- Safe driving practices and general safe work practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED - Required
- Valid Texas Driver’s License - Required
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Physical strength and ability sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under dirty and uncomfortable conditions and in all kinds of weather.
- Heavy labor is defined, for example, as frequently exerting force sufficient to lift approximately 85 pounds and move or maneuver 100 pounds.
- Ability to maintain continuous physical effort throughout the shift, including frequent bending, walking, stooping, digging, manipulating and heavy lifting.
