RESPONSIBILITIES

Review and verify account information for Medicaid, VA, and commercial insurance claims.

Submit clean claims promptly and follow up with insurers to expedite payment.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payer policies, billing procedures, and commercial insurance contracts.

Monitor the hospital Charge Master for changes and report any issues to the Patient Financial Services Manager.

Communicate professionally with patients, insurance representatives, and internal staff to resolve billing concerns
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

2–3 years of experience in hospital patient accounts or medical billing preferred.

Proficiency in using office equipment, including computers, fax machines, copiers, and multi-line phone systems.

Strong understanding of billing processes for Medicaid, VA, and commercial insurers.

High attention to detail with the ability to accurately maintain and interpret insurance data and billing documentation.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage time effectively and handle a high volume of tasks with accuracy.

Must be able to sit, walk, stoop, stand for extended periods, and occasionally lift items during the workday.
ENVIRONMENT:
The Commercial Billing Specialist works in the Patient Financial Services Department at South Peninsula Hospital, a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The work is primarily performed indoors in a clean, well-maintained office setting. While physical demands are moderate, psychological stress can be significant due to strict deadlines, payer coordination, and problem resolution. There are minimal hazards, but the mental demands of maintaining accuracy and compliance under pressure are key considerations.
