Duties
- Conduct patient intake by gathering medical history, verifying insurance information, and updating medical records with accuracy and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Measure vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation to assist in clinical assessments.
- Prepare patients for examinations by performing visual acuity tests, intraocular pressure measurements, and other diagnostic procedures using specialized ophthalmic equipment.
- Assist ophthalmologists during exams and procedures by maintaining aseptic technique and ensuring all instruments are sterile and ready for use.
- Operate optical devices including slit lamps, autorefractors, keratometers, and other diagnostic tools to gather precise data for diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Manage electronic medical records (EMR) systems such as Epic or similar platforms to document patient encounters thoroughly and accurately.
- Support front desk operations by scheduling appointments, processing payments through retail math principles, and managing patient flow efficiently.
- Maintain organized medical records, ensuring compliance with medical coding and billing standards for accurate documentation and reimbursement.
- Provide exceptional patient care by addressing questions, offering post-exam instructions, and ensuring a welcoming environment for diverse populations including pediatrics.
Experience
- Previous experience working in a medical office setting or clinic environment is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with ophthalmology procedures, optical equipment, or optometry is a strong advantage.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy related to the eye, physiology principles, and basic medical coding/billing practices is essential.
- Experience with EMR systems such as Epic or other healthcare software platforms is required.
- Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive patient information in accordance with HIPAA standards while maintaining confidentiality.
- Retail sales experience or front desk responsibilities that involve customer service skills are beneficial for managing patient interactions effectively.
