POSITON Code Enforcement Officer
LOCATION Executive Department
SCHEDULE Full-Time – 8-hour shifts (Some weekend, overtime/flextime work may be required)

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing a variety of technical duties in support of the City’s local code enforcement ordinances. Monitors and enforces a variety of applicable ordinances, codes, and regulations related to zoning, land use, nuisance housing, building codes, health and safety, blight, graffiti, and other matters of public concern; and serves as a resource and provides information on City regulations to property owners, residents, businesses, the public, and other City departments and divisions.
Examples of Major Duties:
- Enforces city zoning and development ordinances.
- Assist with the inspection of ongoing construction, repair, or modification projects for compliance with codes in all areas of construction, including building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, gas, housing, fire, energy, water, sewer, and excavating and grading regulations.
- Enforces business license regulations per the city zoning and development ordinances, including soil and erosion control.
- Issues citations when needed for any code and ordinance violations
- Testifies in court proceedings
- Investigates and addresses complaints from the public
- Performs on-site inspections of properties to determine compliance with various ordinances concerning litter and demolition of unsafe buildings.
- Works closely with citizens, builders, contractor, and public utility companies on inquiries relating to code interpretations.
- Prepares and sends letters to property owners with overgrown lots, abandoned vehicles, sewer leaks, abandoned premises, etc.
- Conducts and maintains log of all inspections, violations, certification of occupancy and various other reports. Compiles status reports on specific assignments as required.
- Reviews permit applications for new and renovated construction to assure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
Knowledge Required
- Knowledge of building codes and relevant city construction and housing codes, nuisance ordinances, construction and trade codes, and zoning ordinances.
- Knowledge of the principle and practices of commercial and residential construction.
- Knowledge of computer operations to enter, process, and acquire data relative to complaints, inspection sites, and effective code enforcement; as well as to provide communication with citizens/customers.
Physical Demands
- This position requires routine sitting, walking and standing. The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing, crouching, kneeling and pulling and ability to drive vehicle.
Work Environment
- The work is often performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Knowledge of city of Milledgeville geography, related ordinances and procedures.
- Possess valid State of Georgia Driver’s License
- Possession of, or obtain within 18 months of hire, Code Enforcement and Building Inspections Certifications
