Job Summary: The Supply Chain & Materials Manager will be responsible for directing, developing, and managing production planning and scheduling, inventory management, materials planning, receiving, warehousing, shipping, scrap, and internal logistics. This position is responsible for ensuring the efficient and timely flow of materials from receipt through production and finished goods shipment while maintaining inventory accuracy, optimizing working capital, and supporting the company’s production and customer delivery requirements.
The Supply Chain & Materials Manager will establish, implement, maintain, and control procedures associated with production planning, material flow, inventory management, receiving, warehousing, shipping, and scrap. This position will supervise team members and provide leadership, direction, and accountability for the overall performance of the department.
Job Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management

Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and development to department team members.

Establish clear expectations for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, accuracy, and overall performance.

Measure and evaluate direct-report employee performance according to company standards for quality and productivity.

Provide accurate, meaningful, and timely performance reviews.

Safety & Compliance

Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by implementing, maintaining, and aligning company policies with health and safety regulations.

Ensure employees follow established safety procedures and material handling requirements.

Identify and address safety risks associated with receiving, warehousing, material handling, shipping, and scrap operations.

Ensure department procedures and activities comply with applicable company policies, regulatory requirements, and customer requirements.
Production Planning & Scheduling
-
Responsible for the coordination of production capacity, material planning, production scheduling, and inventory availability to maximize the machine build plan and support customer delivery requirements.

Develop, maintain, and communicate production schedules based on customer demand, available capacity, material availability, and production priorities.

Identify production constraints, capacity limitations, material shortages, and other bottlenecks and develop plans to minimize or eliminate delays.

Partner with Operations and Production leadership to balance production priorities, available resources, and customer requirements.

Monitor schedule adherence and proactively communicate changes, risks, and recovery plans.

Continuously improve planning and scheduling processes to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve on-time delivery.
Materials & Inventory Management

Establish and implement methods and best practices related to inventory forecasting, material control, inventory accuracy, replenishment, and scheduling.

Manage and flex material demand and flow to accommodate fluctuations in forecasts, production requirements, and business growth while ensuring the timely availability of components.

Maintain appropriate inventory levels to support production requirements while minimizing excess and obsolete inventory.
-
Establish appropriate inventory controls, stocking strategies, cycle count procedures, and inventory accuracy standards.

Monitor inventory turns, days on hand, excess inventory, obsolete inventory, shortages, and other key inventory metrics.

Lead efforts to identify and resolve inventory discrepancies and establish root causes and corrective actions.

Ensure accurate system transactions and controls for the movement of materials throughout the facility.
Receiving, Warehousing & Material Flow
-
Oversee receiving activities to ensure incoming materials are accurately received, identified, inspected as required, and processed in a timely manner.

Establish and maintain effective warehouse procedures for receiving, identification, storage, material handling, picking, staging, and movement of materials.

Ensure materials are properly identified, stored, protected, and available when needed for production.

Establish and maintain standards for warehouse organization, housekeeping, inventory accuracy, material locations, and material flow.

Oversee the movement of materials from receiving through production and finished goods to ensure efficient flow and minimize unnecessary handling.

Ensure receiving and warehouse activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company procedures and applicable requirements.
Shipping & Logistics
-
Oversee finished goods shipping activities to ensure products are accurately packaged, documented, and shipped according to customer requirements and scheduled delivery dates.

Ensure shipping documentation, labeling, packaging, and related requirements are completed accurately and on time.

Coordinate internal and external logistics activities to support on-time customer delivery.

Monitor freight, shipping performance, and delivery requirements and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Partner with Production, Purchasing, and other departments to resolve shipping and delivery issues.
Supplier & Purchasing Coordination

Partner with Purchasing to develop and implement supplier strategies that ensure correct delivery, quality, quantity, and supply flow of materials.

Communicate material requirements, shortages, changes in demand, and production priorities to Purchasing.

Support supplier performance improvement by identifying recurring delivery, quality, quantity, or availability issues.

Collaborate with Purchasing to ensure supplier lead times, order quantities, safety stocks, and replenishment strategies support production requirements.
Scrap & Material Disposition

Oversee the identification, segregation, tracking, and disposition of scrap and excess materials.

Establish procedures to ensure scrap is accurately recorded, controlled, and removed from inventory in a timely manner.

Monitor scrap activity and identify trends, opportunities for cost reduction, and opportunities to improve material utilization.

Partner with Operations, Quality, and Finance as appropriate to ensure proper disposition and accounting of scrap materials.

Maintain accurate records related to scrap, material disposition, and inventory adjustments.
Performance Management & Continuous Improvement
-
Lead the organization in attaining key metrics including working capital, inventory turns, days on hand, inventory accuracy, on-time delivery, schedule adherence, receiving performance, shipping performance, and scrap reduction.

Develop, monitor, and report department KPIs and establish corrective actions when performance does not meet expectations.

Understand department key performance indicators and contribute to achieving these goals both individually and as a team.

Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, eliminate waste, improve material flow, and increase operational efficiency.

Utilize data and analysis to identify trends, develop solutions, and support business decisions.

Implement standardized processes and controls that improve visibility, accountability, and performance across the supply chain.
Other

Forecast product and material needs by gathering, analyzing, and validating data.

Participate in cross-functional planning and business meetings to communicate material availability, production capacity, inventory, shipping, and supply chain risks.

Develop and maintain appropriate procedures, work instructions, and controls for all areas of responsibility.

Education and Experience:
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Supply Chain or related field with 5 years of experience in Production Planning in a Logistics or
-
Production industry OR 7+ years of experience in Production or Material Planning is required
-
Experience in Aluminum or Automotive manufacturing is preferred
-
Experience in SAP is preferred
-
Experience in MES is preferred
Physical Requirements:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee will be required to:
Sit at a desk for prolonged periods of time and work on a computer; regularly walk and communicate.
Must be comfortable working in an industrial manufacturing environment. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, climb stairs frequently throughout each day, and do some lifting. There are times when you will need to walk throughout the manufacturing plant floor or walk between buildings, which includes but is not limited to walking outside, walking up and down stairs, walking across metal grates and potentially being in contact with slippery surfaces.
