This role is responsible for preparing and cooking food according to established recipes and dietary guidelines, typically in a food service or institutional setting. Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates should have experience in food preparation, particularly in an institutional setting.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Food Service Worker/Cook will be responsible for preparing meals by following specific recipes and meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This includes cooking large quantities of food, ensuring proper portion control, and maintaining the quality and taste of dishes. The role requires strict adherence to food safety and sanitation standards, including proper handling, storage, and preparation of food items, as well as maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, washing dishes, and sanitizing equipment. The individual will assist in inventory management by tracking ingredients, informing supervisors about low stock levels, and supporting the receipt and storage of food supplies. Collaboration with other kitchen staff is essential to ensure timely meal service and adherence to dietary requirements. The role may also involve occasional interaction with staff and residents while serving meals and accommodating dietary restrictions. Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate records such as logging food and equipment temperatures, documenting food usage, and following procedures for food waste management. Full-time cooks are expected to work flexible schedules, including weekends and holidays, while performing duties in accordance with health regulations.
Knowledge:
The role requires basic verbal and written communication skills to convey both simple and complex ideas to residents. Candidates should be capable of preparing and serving meals and snacks in compliance with approved menus provided by a Registered Dietitian. Familiarity with USDA meal requirements for adults, including portion sizes and nutritional content, is important. A basic understanding of nutrition, including food allergies and dietary restrictions, is required. Candidates should also have basic arithmetic skills, including working with fractions, percentages, and ratios.
Abilities:
The candidate must be able to prepare meals and snacks according to established menus and health guidelines. Maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in food preparation areas is essential, including regular cleaning of kitchen equipment, countertops, stoves, refrigerators, and garbage disposal areas. The role involves managing food inventory, maintaining accurate supply counts, and requesting approval for any menu changes. The individual must ensure the welfare, health, and safety of all residents during mealtimes, including maintaining accessible records for food allergies. They should be willing to support other staff by providing relief during breaks and maintaining overall kitchen cleanliness and sanitation. Clear communication with supervisors regarding any food-related concerns is expected.
Certifications:
The selected candidate must complete First Aid and CPR training as required.
Physical Requirements:
The role requires the ability to lift and move kitchen supplies and equipment as needed, as well as the ability to stand for extended periods during food preparation.
Additional Requirements:
Candidates must consistently demonstrate proper hygiene in food preparation and be willing to perform related duties as assigned.
