The Wellness Instructor is responsible for planning, leading, and delivering safe and effective group wellness classes for a diverse range of participants throughout Whitman County. Under the general supervision of the Senior Manager of Therapy Services, the Wellness Instructor travels to various community and clinical locations to provide exercise programming that promotes health, functional movement, and overall well-being. The Wellness Instructor must maintain participant confidentiality and adhere to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, and all applicable federal, state, and local requirements. This position requires exceptional communication skills, a passion for community health, and the ability to adapt programming to meet the needs of varied populations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning and Prioritizing
- Develops and plans group wellness class schedules, formats, and curriculum in coordination with the Senior Manager of Therapy Services.
- Coordinates travel logistics across Whitman County to ensure timely class delivery at community and clinical sites.
- Identifies and prioritizes participant needs to deliver appropriate programming for varying fitness levels and health conditions.
Information Gathering
- Collects and documents participant attendance, progress, and outcomes as directed.
- Assists the Senior Manager in data tracking and program evaluation as requested.
- Stays informed of community health needs to tailor programming accordingly.
Decision-Making
- Adapts class content and intensity in real time to ensure participant safety and appropriate challenge.
- Exercises sound judgment in modifying exercises for participants with physical limitations or health considerations.
- Responds to emergencies promptly and appropriately, utilizing CPR/AED and first aid knowledge as needed.
Communication
- Communicates effectively with participants regarding class objectives, exercise technique, and safety expectations.
- Provides feedback and education to participants regarding health and wellness topics in a clear, encouraging manner.
- Coordinates with referring therapists or healthcare staff regarding participant progress and any observed concerns.
- Addresses participant questions and concerns in a courteous and professional manner.
Technical Proficiency
- Plans and leads safe, evidence-informed group wellness and exercise classes for diverse participant populations.
- Applies knowledge of human anatomy and exercise physiology to design appropriate class progressions.
- Operates and monitors fitness equipment safely; performs basic equipment maintenance and reports issues as needed.
- Manages class setup, breakdown, and any required equipment transport to off-site locations.
- Utilizes appropriate cueing and instructional techniques to maximize participant engagement and safety.
Teamwork
- Works collaboratively with Therapy Services staff and community site contacts to coordinate class logistics.
- Actively participates in department and Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics marketing and promotional activities.
- Represents WHMC Therapy Services professionally at all community locations throughout Whitman County.
Financial Responsibilities
- Accepts participant payments at the point of service, including cash, check, and any approved electronic payment methods.
- Accurately records all payments received using designated tracking tools or systems as directed by the Director of Therapy Services.
- Reconciles and balances collected payments at the end of each week, reporting totals and any discrepancies to the Director of Therapy Services in a timely manner.
- Maintains confidentiality and security of all payment information and collected funds in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Quality

- Seeks participant feedback to continuously improve class quality and program satisfaction.
- Adheres to all safety, infection control, and risk management protocols.
Personal Education
- Actively pursues continuing education opportunities through certifications, staff in-services, and professional literature.

- Stays abreast of trends and best practices in group fitness, wellness programming, and community health.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Appropriate interpersonal skills to communicate with patients, families, and staff and to perform activities requiring courtesy and tact.
- Current CPR/AED certification (AHA BLS) or ability to become certified within 30 days of employment.
Preferred
- Current group fitness instructor certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., ACE, NASM, AFAA, ACSM, or equivalent).
- Personal training certification or background.
- Basic understanding of human anatomy and exercise physiology.
- Previous experience leading group fitness, wellness, or community exercise classes.
- College coursework in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Promotion, or a related field.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position is primarily worked in a clinical environment. The position will require the ability to lift, and carry, up to 50 pounds and push or pull over 50 pounds. The position will require bending, twisting, squatting, reaching, reaching overhead, sitting and standing frequently. Occasionally the position requires climbing, kneeling and crawling. The position requires continuous finger dexterity and fine manipulation. All basic life functions such as hearing, seeing, speaking, standing and walking are required.
