Job Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Dog Agility Trainer to join our team at Zoom Room – Overland Park. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience teaching agility classes and/or competing in agility events, and shares our commitment to positive reinforcement methods. This role is dedicated to leading our agility program, helping dogs and their owners build confidence, teamwork, and sport skills.
Schedule
Weekend availability is required for all candidates. We offer both part-time and full-time schedules.
Required days & times:
- Monday evenings: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
- Friday evenings: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
- Saturday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Sunday: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Part-time: Trainers may work shifts of 3–5 hours, covering only the classes they teach. Weekend morning hours are not required — our weekend agility classes begin at noon and we close by 5:00 PM.
Full-time: Trainers work full days on the required days listed above and may take on additional responsibilities beyond class instruction. Opportunity to grow into a hybrid instructor role covering agility plus additional class types.
Duties
- Plan and lead canine sport agility group classes for all skill levels (beginner through advanced)
- Design and set up agility courses appropriate to each class level
- Teach handling techniques, obstacle training, and sequencing using positive reinforcement
- Assess individual dog-and-handler teams and develop customized training progressions
- Provide guidance and support to dog owners on agility training outside of class
- Maintain accurate records of each dog's progress through the agility program
- Ensure all equipment is used safely and stored properly after each class
- Contribute to a welcoming, encouraging environment for sport dog enthusiasts
- Occasional fill-in coverage for other classes as needed, but not a regular expectation.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience teaching agility classes and/or competing in agility trials/competitions required
- Familiarity with major agility organizations (AKC, USDAA, CPE, NADAC, etc.) preferred
- Commitment to positive reinforcement and force-free training methods
- Strong understanding of dog body language and behavior
- Excellent communication and client education skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Customer service oriented — ability to engage and motivate handlers of all experience levels
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary – up to 50 lbs (agility equipment)
- Background in dog training (1+ year preferred); comfortable running group classes up to 4 dogs.
- Sales experience is advantageous
