We are seeking an experienced Construction Fleet Manager to oversee our comprehensive fleet operations, equipment maintenance, and daily shop logistics. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for ensuring our mixed fleet of over 300 assets, including cranes, excavators, commercial trucks, trailers, and support equipment remains safe, compliant, and highly available to support heavy civil construction projects. The ideal candidate is a strong leader with extensive heavy equipment maintenance experience who can effectively manage personnel, minimize equipment downtime, control operational budgets, and ensure strict regulatory compliance across our entire operation. This position will report to executive management.
Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Manage the maintenance, repair, and readiness of heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, cranes, generators, pumps, and support equipment.
Plan, prioritize, and oversee daily shop operations.
Supervise, mentor, coach, and evaluate mechanics and shop personnel.
Ensure all repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards.
Assist with equipment diagnostics, troubleshooting, inspections, and repairs when needed.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
Approve employee timecards and time-off requests.
Serve as the primary point of communication between operations, project managers, mechanics, vendors, and field personnel.
Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules.
Ensure inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, and scheduled services are completed on time.
Monitor fleet reliability and identify recurring maintenance issues.
Track and assign maintenance intervals using fleet management software.
Ensure compliance with DOT, CHP BIT, Cal/OSHA, CARB, EPA, Clean Truck Check, and all applicable regulations.
Schedule equipment deliveries, transfers, pickups, and transportation.
Communicate equipment availability and repair status with project managers, superintendents, and field personnel.
Prioritize repairs to minimize downtime and project delays.
Manage shop inventory and maintain appropriate stock levels.
Purchase parts, tools, lubricants, tires, and shop supplies.
Coordinate outside repairs, warranty work, and specialty services.
Establish and maintain strong vendor relationships while controlling maintenance costs.
Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget.
Monitor maintenance costs and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
Review repair estimates and evaluate repair-versus-replacement decisions.
Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance histories, and fleet reports using Samsara, B2W Maintain, and digital unit folders.
Coordinate the sale of surplus equipment
Review and approve invoices, ensuring accuracy and proper purchase order (PO) documentation.
Minimum Skills and Work Experience
Five or more years of experience managing heavy equipment and fleet maintenance in the construction industry.
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, trailers, and heavy construction equipment.
Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
Experience in performing equipment diagnostics and repairs.
Experience with fleet management software, including Samsara and B2W Maintain
Ability to read service manuals, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and technical drawings.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
Experience managing maintenance budgets and vendor relationships.
Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
To successfully carry out the essential duties of this position, an employee must be comfortable working in both a professional office environment and a hands-on shop/field environment. The employee must have the ability to inspect equipment in outdoor environments, construction jobsites, and maintenance shops, which may involve lifting, bending, and kneeling.The employee is frequently required to talk and hear while carrying out the responsibilities of this position. The worker frequently must stand, walk, or sit and use a computer. Sometimes the employee needs to reach with their hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Close vision and the ability to refocus are two important vision skills for this position. Compensation and Benefits Snapshot:
Annual Salary Range: $120,000 – 160,000.
