About Catch a Ride Network
At Catch a Ride Network, our vision is to provide mobility solutions for the health and well-being of every person in every community. Driven by our core values of Trust, Compassion, and Perseverance, we empower communities through mobility, technology, and compassion.
Our Grocery Express program, supported by Ford Philanthropy, serves individuals and families living in affordable housing across Detroit by coordinating dedicated transportation shifts to grocery stores like Walmart, Meijer, and Kroger, ensuring their SNAP dollars go further.
Position Summary
The Community Impact Coordinator (CIC) serves as the local, face-to-face operational anchor for the Grocery Express program in Detroit. Working in close collaboration with our Volunteer Manager, the CIC ensures local operations run seamlessly.
This role requires a flexible schedule of 15 to 20 hours per week depending on volunteer coverage and program needs. Some hours could include evenings and weekends.
The Trajectory of the Role: Currently, the Grocery Express program operates 6–7 scheduled trips per month, and local volunteer coverage fluctuates heavily. Therefore, this position will initially involve significant, direct hands-on driving. However, as the local volunteer network expands, your hands-on driving hours might decrease, and your time will pivot toward expanding volunteer recruitment, assisting with virtual onboarding, and deepening local community impact.
Key Responsibilities
1. Driving Operations & Shift Coverage (Variable, up to 20 hours/week)
- Serve as the essential backup driver for the Grocery Express program. In the event of a volunteer driver cancellation or a gap in scheduling, operate the program van to complete the 4.5-hour passenger shifts.
- Provide a safe, welcoming, and compassionate experience for passengers from affordable housing complexes to designated grocery stores and back, building relationships over time.
- Manage vehicle check-out and check-in logistics, picking up and returning the vehicle and keys to its designated base.
2. Volunteer Recruitment & Virtual Onboarding Assistance (Growth & Transition Focus)
- As direct driving shifts are filled by your recruitment efforts, you will reallocate those hours to growth and support duties:
- Actively engage in shared in-person volunteer recruitment efforts in Detroit to help build a robust local driver pipeline.
- Assist the Volunteer Manager with the virtual onboarding process for new Detroit volunteers (e.g., helping applicants navigate online training, ensuring background check document uploads are moving forward, and assisting with remote technology training).
- Help monitor volunteer sign-ups via internal scheduling systems and proactively follow up with volunteers to maintain high retention.
- Partner with the Volunteer Manager to maintain the driver calendar and ensure all Grocery Express dates are fully covered.
3. Fleet Maintenance & Van Upkeep
- Take full ownership of the local care, cleanliness, and safety of the 13-passenger program van.
- Schedule and transport the vehicle for regular maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, brake checks).
- Manage local vehicle paperwork, including coordination of registration renewals and keeping insurance/safety documentation up-to-date inside the vehicle.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Driving Experience: Proven comfort and experience safely operating larger passenger vehicles (specifically a 13-passenger van or similar size) is required.
- Driver's License: Valid Michigan Driver’s License with a clean driving record. (A Michigan Chauffeur’s License is optional/preferred but not required).
- Physical Demands: Ability to safely operate a large passenger van. Must be able to assist passengers by lifting and loading grocery bags or mobility aids into the vehicle as needed (up to 40 lbs).
- Communication & Reliability: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Because your direct supervisor is remote, you must be a highly reliable self-starter who is comfortable working independently and using digital collaboration tools (Zoom/Teams, scheduling platforms) to assist with virtual volunteer onboarding.
- Core Values Alignment: A deep commitment to acting with Trust, Compassion, and Perseverance when interacting with community populations.
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Employee assistance program
- Paid time off
