Since 1982, the Berkeley Chess School has inspired a love of chess in thousands of children each year through engaging instruction in more than 150 Bay Area schools. Its exceptional program has helped develop numerous state and national champions, National Masters, FIDE Masters, and its community includes five alumni who have gone on to become Grandmasters to date. As an After-School Chess Coach, you'll engage children with fun, interactive lessons that build strategic thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship while making a meaningful impact in a paid, rewarding role.
Responsibilities
- Lead engaging chess lessons tailored to K-5 students from beginners to intermediate level players
- Implement Berkeley Chess School curriculum specifically developed for young players that promote critical thinking, strategic planning, and game analysis
- Manage classroom behavior effectively to ensure a focused, respectful learning environment
- Communicate regularly with the Berkeley Chess School Coach Coordinator about progress and upcoming events
Skills
- Passionate about working with children, with prior experience supporting youth programs or educational settings.
- Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment for diverse groups of learners.
- Experienced chess player; a USCF chess rating is a plus.
- Reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented, with a strong sense of responsibility.
- Able to remain professional, adaptable, and self-directed in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
Pay: $50.00 - $55.00 per hour
