The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of overhead cranes, fork lifts and other material-handling equipment to move, position, load, and unload materials throughout the manufacturing facility. This position plays an important role in supporting production by ensuring raw materials, components, finished products, and other materials are safely and efficiently transported to the appropriate locations.
The Crane Operator must follow all company safety procedures, operating requirements, and applicable regulations while maintaining a strong focus on workplace safety, equipment care, and accuracy.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely operate overhead cranes and other approved material-handling equipment to move and position materials.
- Load, unload, lift, transport, and accurately position materials, products, and equipment.
- Inspect crane equipment, rigging, hooks, slings, chains, and other lifting devices before use and report any defects or unsafe conditions.
- Properly secure and balance loads prior to lifting or moving materials.
- Follow established load-handling procedures and never exceed rated equipment or load capacities.
- Use appropriate rigging techniques and lifting accessories for various materials and loads.
- Follow directions from Production, Operations, and other authorized personnel regarding material movement and placement.
- Follow established schedules and priorities within the assigned department.
- Safely maneuver loads through the facility while maintaining awareness of employees, equipment, structures, and other hazards.
- Communicate effectively with employees and spotters during lifting and material-handling activities.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and ensure personnel remain clear of suspended loads and designated lifting areas.
- Move raw materials and work-in-process materials to support production schedules.
- Transport finished products and materials to designated storage, staging, or shipping areas.
- Assist with loading and unloading trucks as needed.
- Maintain accurate documentation related to material movement when required, including the use of scanners.
- Perform routine housekeeping around work areas and ensure aisles and crane operating areas remain clear.
- Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, damaged materials, or other issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and work instructions.
- Participate in safety training and other required training programs.
- Assist other departments and perform additional duties as assigned.
Safety Responsibilities
- Operate cranes and lifting equipment in a safe and responsible manner at all times.
- Complete required pre-operation inspections before operating equipment.
- Immediately report unsafe equipment or conditions and remove defective equipment from service when appropriate.
- Follow applicable OSHA requirements, company safety procedures, and established crane operating practices.
- Never operate equipment while impaired, distracted, or otherwise unable to safely perform the job.
- Maintain safe distances from suspended loads and ensure coworkers remain outside restricted areas.
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous overhead crane or industrial material-handling experience preferred.
- Manufacturing or steel-processing experience preferred.
- Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and related material-handling equipment.
- Familiarity with basic rigging and load-handling practices preferred.
- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to accurately judge distances, load positioning, and clearance.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be dependable and demonstrate consistent attendance.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, climb stairs or ladders, and work around manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, temperature variations, and moving equipment.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe footwear, and other required protective equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment as required by the position.
- Ability to work around suspended loads and operate equipment requiring visual and spatial awareness.
Working Conditions
This position works primarily in a manufacturing environment and may be exposed to moving machinery, overhead lifting operations, noise, dust, heat, cold, and other industrial conditions. The employee is expected to consistently follow all safety requirements and maintain awareness of their surroundings.
