Fiber Optic Driller – Job Description
Position Summary
The Fiber Optic Driller is responsible for operating and maintaining directional drilling equipment to install underground fiber optic conduit and telecommunications infrastructure. The Driller works as part of a field crew to complete projects safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, mechanically inclined, experienced with directional drilling or underground utility construction, and able to travel at times.
Essential Job Duties Directional Drilling & Production
- Safely operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install fiber optic conduit.
- Follow construction plans, bore profiles, utility markings, and project specifications.
- Perform bore shots accurately and efficiently while maintaining production goals.
- Monitor drilling conditions, ground conditions, drilling fluid, and bore path throughout each operation.
- Communicate with the locator and other crew members during drilling operations.
- Maintain consistent production while prioritizing safety and quality.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
- Properly wear and utilize all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a safe work area around the drill and job site.
- Identify potential hazards and communicate safety concerns to the Foreman.
- Follow proper procedures when working around existing underground utilities.
- Assist with traffic control and protection of the public when required.
Equipment Responsibilities
- Perform daily inspections of the directional drill and related equipment.
- Properly operate, maintain, and care for drilling equipment.
- Monitor equipment for mechanical issues and report problems immediately.
- Maintain proper drilling fluid/mud mixtures and monitor fluid levels as needed.
- Keep the drill, tools, and work area clean and organized.
- Assist with routine maintenance, fueling, and servicing of equipment.
Crew & Job Site Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Foreman, locator, laborers, and other crew members.
- Follow instructions from the Foreman and communicate effectively with the crew.
- Assist with setup and breakdown of the drilling operation.
- Assist with locating, potholing, pulling conduit, and other underground fiber construction activities as needed.
- Maintain a professional and productive job site.
- Ensure all tools, materials, and equipment are secured at the end of each workday.
- Assist the crew with cleaning and restoring the work area before leaving the job site.
Qualifications
Previous experience operating a horizontal directional drill is required.
- Fiber optic, telecommunications, underground utility, or directional drilling experience preferred.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment.
- Basic understanding of underground utility construction and drilling procedures.
- Ability to read and understand basic construction plans and bore profiles.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot equipment.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift/move equipment and materials as required.

- Minimize damage to existing utilities and surrounding property.
- Properly maintain company equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site.
- Communicate equipment problems, utility conflicts, and production issues immediately.
- Work as a team and maintain a professional attitude.
- Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and instructions from the Foreman.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods outdoors.
- Ability to lift and carry tools, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to work in dirt, mud, dust, heat, cold, and other outdoor conditions.
- Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, drilling machinery, and underground utilities.
- Ability to travel
Position Expectations
The Fiber Optic Driller is expected to operate equipment responsibly, maintain high production standards, follow all safety requirements, and work cooperatively with the entire crew. Safety, quality, productivity, and proper care of company equipment are essential responsibilities of this position.
Pay: $200.00 - $400.00 per day
