ABOUT THE RECTORY
The Rectory Detroit is a pizza restaurant located in the historic former pastor's residence adjacent to The Congregation Detroit on Rosa Parks Blvd in Detroit's Boston Edison neighborhood. We are a community rooted, owner operated business committed to quality, hospitality, and neighborhood investment.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Restaurant Manager is responsible for overseeing all day to day operations at The Rectory. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a dynamic, independent restaurant environment and takes genuine ownership of their team and their space. This person will work closely with ownership and in close collaboration with the Café Manager at The Congregation to ensure alignment across both venues.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
This role reports directly to the owners and manages a team that includes supervisors, lead line cook, line cooks, dishwashers, and front of house team members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations
Oversee all daily restaurant operations from open to close, ensuring smooth, consistent, high quality service across all shifts. Maintain and enforce food safety, sanitation, and health code standards. Own the guest experience from floor to kitchen.
People Management
Lead, schedule, and develop a full team including supervisors, the lead line cook, line cooks, dishwashers, and front of house staff. Foster a positive, accountable, and high performing culture. Handle hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance conversations in alignment with ownership.
Inventory and Ordering
Own all inventory management and ordering for the restaurant. Conduct regular inventory counts, maintain par levels, and build strong vendor relationships. Place orders accurately and on schedule to ensure the kitchen and bar are consistently stocked without over ordering or excess waste.
Financial Oversight
Monitor labor costs, food costs, and waste with a close eye on the bottom line. Provide operational reporting to owners and flag issues proactively. Inventory and ordering data should feed directly into cost awareness and purchasing decisions.
Cross Venue Collaboration
Partner closely with the Café Manager at The Congregation to coordinate shared resources, staffing needs, events, and operational priorities across both properties.
Guest Experience
Champion hospitality standards and hold the team accountable to delivering a memorable, consistent guest experience. Address guest concerns with professionalism and care.
QUALIFICATIONS
Three or more years of restaurant management experience, preferably in an independent or chef driven environment. Proven track record leading a full restaurant team across both front and back of house. Experience with inventory management and vendor ordering. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams and ownership structures. Food Handler Certification or ServSafe Manager Certification (or willingness to obtain). Familiarity with POS systems; Toast experience a plus. Deep respect for community centered, owner operated business culture.
