The Asphalt Lute Man is responsible for using a lute to spread, level, and smooth hot asphalt to ensure a consistent mat before compaction. This role plays a critical part in the quality of the finished pavement, requiring precision, stamina, and the ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor construction environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Use an asphalt lute to pull, level, and spread asphalt material evenly.
- Ensure smooth transitions and proper mat texture according to specifications.
- Work closely with rakers, paving machine operators, and roller operators to maintain paving quality.
- Identify and correct low spots, bumps, and imperfections before rolling.
- Assist in prepping the work area, including safety setups and cleanup.
- Follow Foreman or Crew Leader directions and coordinate tasks with the crew.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and OSHA/DOT regulations.
- Assist with other paving crew tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience: 1–2 years of asphalt paving or related work preferred.
- Knowledge: Understanding of asphalt material handling, mat finishing techniques, and grades.
- Skills:
- Proficient in using an asphalt lute.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Strong attention to detail for paving quality control.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in hot weather and stand for extended periods.
- Lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive movements.
Work Schedule
- Full-time, with potential overtime.
- May include nights, weekends, or extended hours based on project schedules.
