POLICE CADET
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Police Cadet performs entry-level law enforcement support tasks, including accepting and preparing preliminary reports of minor criminal complaints and accidents, conducting limited patrols as a visible deterrent, and enforcing applicable City ordinances as authorized by the Department. Additional duties may be assigned as required or directed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Lieutenant, Sergeant, or other superior officer.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: Employees in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)
- Accept and prepare preliminary reports of minor criminal complaints and accidents.
- Conduct specific, limited patrol duties to enhance community safety and visibility.
- Ride a bicycle for extended periods while performing patrol duties.
- Walk and/or stand for prolonged periods, often in varying weather conditions.
- Climb over obstacles and perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, or dragging objects.
- Effectively communicate with the public by listening attentively, providing information, and giving clear directions.
- Obtain statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Serve date and time-sensitive subpoenas as assigned.
- Maintain logs and accurately record all equipment being issued and returned.
- Monitor security cameras and report any suspicious or unusual activity.
- Keep work areas adequately stocked with necessary supplies and equipment.
- Verify and process bond money.
- Log-in and process individuals who have been arrested.
- Facilitate the bond-out process for arrested individuals.
- Prepare supplemental reports and documentation.
- Assist on-duty command officers or other superior officers as requested.
- Confiscate, preserve, and log evidence and found property into the department’s property system.
- Conduct parking enforcement and perform beach, park, and canal patrols, taking appropriate enforcement action when necessary.
- Deliver necessary court documents to the District Court efficiently and accurately.
- Fingerprint citizens for court, firearms applications and employment purposes.
- Assist with Crossing Guard assignments as needed.
- Provide traffic control during special events and other assigned situations.
- Answer and log phone calls/emails for C.A.P.T.U.R.E./Tip411 anonymous tip lines, disseminating time-sensitive information to officers.
- Participate in Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Days, securing and processing unwanted medications from the public for safe destruction.
- Actively participate in Community-Oriented Policing Events, such as:
- A.P.T.U.R.E. Spaghetti Dinner
- Treats and Trucks
- Halloween Stroll
- Elementary/Youth Academies
- Perform other related duties as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to listen effectively, provide clear information, and give accurate directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to communications.
- Proficiency in preparing detailed and accurate reports and forms.
- Legible handwriting and competent spelling skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with fellow employees, external agencies, and diverse community members.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with the public.
- Ability to respond professionally and calmly in stressful situations.
- Capability to maintain a satisfactory work record and adhere to departmental policies and procedures.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Enrollment in college: Currently attending college with a focus on law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field.
- Minimum GPA: Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
- Good moral character: No significant law enforcement contacts or history of criminal activity.
- Physical capability: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including prolonged walking, biking, and standing, as well as, climbing obstacles and lifting objects as necessary.
