Position Description
The Substitute Night Manager is an as-needed position responsible for the overall operation, safety, and security of the shelter during overnight hours. The Night Manager ensures residents receive appropriate support, responds to emergencies and conflicts, maintains facility standards, and communicates important information to shelter leadership and other staff. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
Key ResponsibilitiesResident Care and Support
- Ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all shelter residents.
- Respond appropriately to residents’ immediate needs, concerns, and requests.
- Monitor the shelter environment and address behavioral or safety concerns.
- Assist with conflict resolution and de-escalation when necessary.
- Coordinate with case managers, social workers, emergency services, and other service providers as appropriate.
- Enforce shelter rules and policies consistently, fairly, and respectfully.
Facility Management and Security
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe shelter environment.
- Conduct routine inspections of the facility for safety, security, and maintenance concerns.
- Monitor building access and follow established security procedures.
- Ensure residents comply with shelter policies.
- Document maintenance, security, or other facility concerns and report them to the appropriate staff.
Data Collection and Documentation
- Maintain accurate overnight resident counts and required records.
- Complete incident reports and other documentation as required.
- Document significant events, resident concerns, rule violations, emergencies, and staff actions.
- Communicate relevant information to the incoming shift and appropriate supervisory staff.
Emergency Response
- Respond appropriately and promptly to emergencies, crises, medical concerns, behavioral incidents, and other urgent situations.
- Contact emergency services when necessary.
- Follow established emergency, fire, evacuation, and safety procedures.
- Notify the Executive Director or designated supervisor of significant incidents as soon as reasonably possible.

- Maintain confidentiality and respect the dignity and privacy of shelter residents.
- Treat all residents, visitors, staff, and community partners with professionalism and respect.
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times.
- Work independently while exercising sound judgment and knowing when to seek assistance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, individuals in crisis, or other vulnerable populations preferred.
- Previous experience in shelter, residential, security, social services, or related settings preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful or crisis situations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
Hours
- Overnight shift: 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM
- Position is as needed and may be scheduled to provide coverage for regular Night Managers who are unavailable.
- Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Pay: From $13.57 per hour
