Position Summary
The Area Service Technician (AST) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and performance of Spartan chemical dispensing systems across an assigned territory.
This role is primarily focused on new system installations (60%) and preventative maintenance (40%), with end-user training delivered as part of the installation process.
Territory responsible Greater Chicago Area Coverage: Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Eastern Iowa.
The AST plays a critical role in the transition from sales to service, ensuring that all commitments made during the sales process are executed accurately and professionally.
This is a highly customer-facing role. The AST is regularly on-site with end users and is responsible for delivering a professional, clear, and confident experience that reinforces trust in Spartan products and services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Equipment Installation (Primary Focus – 60%)
- Install dilution control, laundry, and warewash systems in a variety of customer environments
- Execute installations efficiently, accurately, and to Spartan standards
- Ensure all systems are fully operational, tested, and validated prior to completion
- Deliver on-site end-user training during installation to ensure proper usage and safety
- Complete all installations on time with zero preventable callbacks
2. Preventative Maintenance (40%)
- Perform scheduled maintenance to ensure consistent system performance
- Identify and resolve potential issues before they lead to downtime
- Maintain equipment reliability and reduce emergency service needs
3. Troubleshooting & Technical Problem Solving
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and system-related issues
- Program washers and chemical dispensing systems as required
- Apply strong problem-solving skills in dynamic, real-world environments
- Take full ownership of issues until fully resolved
4. Customer Interaction & Communication (Critical)
- Serve as the primary on-site representative of Spartan during installations and service visits
- Communicate clearly and professionally with end users, operators, and facility staff
- Build trust by explaining system functionality, usage, and expectations in a practical, understandable way
- Deliver hands-on training that ensures users are confident operating the system
- Handle questions, concerns, and issues with professionalism and respect
Important: This role requires regular interaction with blue-collar workforces. Success depends on the ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively in real-world working environments.
5. Territory & Inventory Management
- Manage daily schedule using a shared calendar, adapting to changes in real time
- Maintain inventory of installation and maintenance parts (tubing, labels, dispensers, etc.)
- Ensure readiness to complete jobs efficiently without delays
6. Collaboration & Execution Support
- Work closely with Regional Managers (RMs) to support new business implementation and account retention
- Communicate proactively on installation timing, issues, and customer needs
- Ensure the successful execution of new business by delivering on all commitments made during the sales process

- Customers are confident using systems immediately after installation

Core Competencies
Technical Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in:
- Plumbing systems
- Basic electrical work
- Chemical dispensing or similar equipment
- Ability to program washers and dispensing systems
- Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Customer-Facing Skills (Non-Negotiable)
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with frontline, blue-collar end users
- Comfortable engaging with customers throughout the day—not just completing technical tasks
- Able to explain systems in a simple, practical, and confident manner

Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of field service, maintenance, or technical experience
- Proven mechanical ability including plumbing and basic electrical work
- Experience in a customer-facing service role (not just back-end maintenance)
- Ability to troubleshoot and install equipment in the field
- Ability to learn and operate system programming tools
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within territory
