POSITION OVERVIEW: The Crime Analyst is a civilian professional responsible for collecting, compiling, analyzing, and disseminating crime-related data and intelligence to support law-enforcement operations, investigations, strategic planning, and resource deployment. This position plays a critical role in enhancing public safety through evidence-based policing and informed decision-making. The Crime Analyst works closely with patrol deputies, criminal investigators, command staff, and external criminal-justice partners to identify crime patterns, trends, series, and emerging threats. This position does not exercise law-enforcement authority and does not engage in enforcement actions. This position is civilian, non-sworn, and does not require DCJS law-enforcement certification.
AUTHORITY and RESPONSIBILITY per G.O. 2.04: It is the policy of Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office that all employees shall comply with the guidelines of this General Order and all other Sheriff's Office General Orders, and carry out their duties, obligations, and responsibilities to the best of their abilities. At every level within this Sheriff's Office, personnel are given the authority to make decisions necessary for the effective execution of their responsibilities. The Crime Analyst is granted delegated authority to access approved law-enforcement data systems, analyze information, and produce analytical products within the scope of assigned duties. Responsibility is accompanied by appropriate authority, and the incumbent is accountable for accuracy, confidentiality, and professional use of sensitive information in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy, state law, and accreditation standards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education

Bachelor's degree in criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related field or Crime Analyst certification

Master's degree preferred.
Experience
-
Minimum three (3) years of experience performing quantitative or analytical work, preferably in a law-enforcement or public-safety environment.

Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis and data visualization.
Technical Proficiency

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data manipulation).

Working knowledge of database systems (e.g., SQL, Access).

Experience with GIS software for spatial analysis.

Familiarity with law-enforcement systems such as RMS and CAD.

WORKING CONDITIONS
