Position Overview
The Tire Technician is responsible for performing tire installation, repair, maintenance, and related automotive services on passenger and light truck vehicles. The position also performs basic preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
This position plays an important role in ensuring vehicle safety, quality service, customer satisfaction, and efficient service center operations. Tire Technicians are expected to demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, safe work practices, and a commitment to providing quality service.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
- Install, mount, balance, rotate, repair, and replace tires on passenger and light truck vehicles.
- Perform tire inspections and identify tire wear, damage, air pressure concerns, and other conditions affecting vehicle safety.
- Perform tire repairs in accordance with Company procedures and applicable industry standards.
- Install and service valve stems, TPMS components, and other tire-related components as trained and authorized.
- Perform tire-related services, including wheel removal and installation, torque procedures, and proper inflation.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, fluid checks, fluid top-offs, and other routine maintenance as assigned.
- Conduct basic vehicle inspections and identify maintenance or safety concerns that should be brought to the attention of the customer or manager.
- Operate tire-changing machines, wheel balancers, lifts, jacks, air compressors, and other shop equipment safely and properly.
- Assist with loading and unloading tires and other shop materials, including lace truck operations when applicable.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, tools, equipment, and service bays.
- Properly dispose of used oil, filters, tires, and other automotive materials in accordance with Company procedures and applicable regulations.
- Provide friendly, professional, and helpful customer service when interacting with customers.
- Communicate identified vehicle or tire concerns clearly to the customer, service advisor, or manager.
- Uphold professional appearance, conduct, and Company standards at all times.
- Follow all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
- Follow proper lifting, vehicle-lifting, wheel-torque, tire-service, and equipment-operation procedures.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist with other service center duties as needed.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, or otherwise moves tires, wheels, equipment, tools, and parts weighing 50 pounds or more independently.
- Occasionally lifts, carries, or otherwise moves tires, equipment, tools, and parts weighing more than 75 pounds with assistance from another person or the use of appropriate lifting equipment.
- Frequently stands, walks, bends, stoops, squats, kneels, reaches, and performs repetitive motions throughout the work shift.
- Regularly works in a service center environment with exposure to noise, odors, temperature changes, dirt, dust, vehicle fluids, and automotive equipment.
- Must be able to safely operate tire service equipment, vehicle lifts, hand tools, power tools, and other shop equipment appropriate to the position.
- Must follow all applicable safety procedures when working around vehicles, lifts, tires, wheels, compressed air, and automotive fluids.
- Work hours generally align with service center operating hours and may vary based on business needs.
Requirements & Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous tire, automotive, mechanical, or service center experience preferred but not required for entry-level positions.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles and shop equipment as required by the position.
- Basic knowledge of tire types, sizes, applications, inflation requirements, tread wear, and tire repair procedures.
- Ability to properly mount, balance, rotate, repair, and install tires on passenger and light truck vehicles.
- Basic knowledge of preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, filters, fluid levels, and vehicle inspections.
- Ability to recognize and communicate basic tire, wheel, and vehicle safety concerns.
- Willingness to learn through hands-on training, formal instruction, and Company SOPs.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Effective communication and basic customer service skills.
- Ability to follow instructions, Company policies, safety procedures, and management direction.
