Facilities & Maintenance Manager
Position Overview: The Facilities & Maintenance Manager plays a vital role in maintaining the physical footprint, safety, and operational excellence of the Academy’s historic school building and grounds. This role balances hands-on technical maintenance with team leadership, requiring an individual who can comfortably transition from troubleshooting situations like HVAC/plumbing issues to managing staff and coordinating external vendors.
Reporting directly to the Director of Finance and the Head of School, the Manager ensures a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and families, while actively supporting the logistics of school events and daily operations.
Summary of Responsibilities
Staff Management & Supervision
- Supervise and direct the daily activities of two full-time maintenance staff members
- Manage team scheduling, including the review and approval of time-off requests to ensure consistent coverage
- Conduct periodic performance evaluations and provide necessary training or guidance
- Arrange for and oversee seasonal help as needed, specifically for labor-intensive periods such as snow removal and summer deep-cleaning
Facilities & Operations
- Maintain the physical footprint of the Academy, including the historic school building and grounds
- Coordinate with external facilities vendors and service providers for specialized repairs as needed (e.g., roofing, major HVAC, elevator maintenance)
- Act as the point person for emergency repairs and security-related facility issues
Logistics & General Administration
- Assist faculty and staff with the physical setup and breakdown of school, athletic, and development events, as needed
- Maintain accurate records of inspections
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance or Head of School
Key Skills & Competencies
- Proven experience in facilities maintenance, including basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems and grounds care
- Strong leadership skills with experience in managing and scheduling staff
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and vendor relationships
simultaneously
- Familiarity with safety regulations and building codes
- Strong attention to detail and proactive problem-solving skills
- Positive communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with school
leadership and families
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in various weather conditions
- Proficient in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive) and adept at mastering new software and digital tools
- Being bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus
