Associate Director, Family & Community Engagement
SUMMARY
The Regional Engagement Coordinator provides leadership and operational oversight of school-based family engagement and attendance initiatives within an assigned Richmond region. Reporting to the Associate Director of Family & Community Engagement, in the Department of Community Engagement & Partnership, this role supervises and supports teams of Family Liaisons and Bilingual Family Liaisons to ensure consistent, high-quality, and data-driven engagement practices that improve student attendance and outcomes.
Serving as the critical link between division strategy and school-level implementation, the Regional Engagement Coordinator leads the development and execution of engagement and attendance strategies that strengthen relationships among families, schools, and community partners. This role ensures families have access to the information, resources, and opportunities necessary for students to thrive, with a strong focus on reducing chronic absenteeism, enhancing communication, and increasing family and student advocacy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises Family Liaisons and Bilingual Family Liaisons, providing ongoing coaching, performance management, and accountability to ensure alignment with Division goals and engagement strategies.
- Develops, coordinates, and leads the implementation of regional strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism and strengthen family engagement across assigned schools.
- Develops and monitors systems for assigning, tracking, and evaluating student attendance and engagement plans, ensuring consistency, quality, and impact.
- Uses data to identify attendance trends, monitor engagement efforts, and guide targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.
- Collaborates with school leaders, central office staff, and community partners to align engagement and attendance strategies with school improvement priorities.
- Designs and delivers professional learning opportunities for Family Liaisons and school-based staff focused on engagement best practices, relationship building, and attendance interventions.
- Identifies and addresses barriers to student attendance and family engagement, coordinating supports and resources across schools and from community organizations.
- Conducts asset-based community mapping to identify and leverage resources that support student success and family engagement.
- Develops and implements consistent protocols for school-based attendance meetings (e.g., SAST), ensuring fidelity and effectiveness.
- Leads and manages division-wide and school-based engagement initiatives and projects, providing regular updates and ensuring timely execution.
- Monitors school and division data systems to track attendance, engagement, PFE & incentive funding, and program outcomes, using findings to inform continuous improvement.
- Supports engagement efforts for targeted student populations, advisory councils, and alternative education programs, ensuring equitable access to resources and supports.
- Represents the Department of Community Engagement and Partnership at school and community events, promoting initiatives and strengthening partnerships.
- Fosters a culture of strong customer service, professionalism, and accountability, ensuring responsive communication and high-quality support to schools, families, and partners.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in education, public administration, social work, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in family engagement, student services, attendance initiatives, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience supervising staff, leading teams, or managing programs in a school system, nonprofit, or community-based organization preferred.
- Experience supporting initiatives related to student attendance, engagement, or re-engagement preferred.
- Experience working in racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse urban communities preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Virginia driver's license and willingness to use personal automobile.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
- Ability to build and sustain effective relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and data tracking systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves frequent sitting, talking, and hearing, as well as the use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, reach with hands and
arms, and stoop or crouch. Visual acuity is required for reading, preparing documents, viewing a computer screen, and performing administrative functions with accuracy and attention to detail.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office setting and school-based environment with frequent interaction with students, families, and staff. The role may require travel between sites and in-person meetings in community settings. The position is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and requires managing multiple priorities simultaneously. Evening or weekend work will be required to support meetings or community engagement events.
