Overview
The Town of Chincoteague is seeking a motivated, professional, and service-oriented individual to join our team as a Code Compliance Officer. This position plays an important role in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of our community through the enforcement of the Town’s Short-Term Rental (STR) Ordinance, zoning regulations, and general municipal ordinances.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in building a long-term career in local government. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to receive training and advancement toward becoming a Virginia Certified Building Code Official.
Responsibilities
· Conduct required safety inspections of licensed Short-Term Rental (STR) properties.
· Enforce the Town’s Short-Term Rental Ordinance, zoning regulations, and municipal ordinances.
· Investigate citizen complaints regarding zoning, property maintenance, nuisance, and ordinance violations.
· Prepare inspection reports, notices of violation, compliance documentation, and case files.
· Educate residents, property owners, and business owners regarding Town ordinances and compliance requirements.
· Coordinate with the Building Official, Planning Department, Police Department, Fire Department, and other agencies as necessary.
· Maintain accurate electronic records and inspection databases.
· Attend meetings, hearings, and court proceedings as required.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Proven experience in safety, construction or environmental compliance roles with an understanding of local building codes and ordinances.
- Knowledge of OSHA standards and construction safety regulations essential for site inspections.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately for compliance assessment purposes.
- Excellent report writing skills with experience preparing detailed inspection reports and regulatory documentation.
- Strong analytical skills for identifying violations and recommending effective corrective actions.
- Effective communication skills to liaise confidently with contractors, government officials, and community stakeholders.

Pay: $38,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
