We are seeking an experienced Commercial Construction Craftsman who takes pride in doing the job correctly, safely, and efficiently. This is not an entry-level or apprenticeship position. We need a skilled construction professional who already understands commercial construction methods, can work from plans and specifications, and can perform quality work with limited supervision.
The right candidate will bring strong hands-on experience, professional judgment, dependability, and the ability to contribute productively from the first day on the job.
Position Summary
The Commercial Construction Craftsman performs skilled construction work on commercial building projects, renovations, additions, and facility improvements. This position requires broad construction knowledge and the ability to complete assigned work independently while coordinating effectively with project supervisors, subcontractors, and other members of the field team.
The successful candidate must understand how commercial projects operate, recognize quality standards, anticipate the next steps in the work, and complete assignments without requiring basic construction training.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform skilled carpentry and general commercial construction work according to project drawings, specifications, schedules, and quality standards.
- Lay out, construct, install, repair, and modify walls, framing systems, blocking, doors, frames, hardware, trim, casework, fixtures, and other building components.
- Complete interior and exterior construction tasks, including demolition, framing, drywall, ceilings, siding, finish carpentry, and punch-list work.
- Accurately measure, cut, shape, assemble, and install construction materials.
- Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, details, and written work instructions.
- Determine the proper materials, tools, equipment, and work sequence needed to complete assigned tasks.
- Identify field conditions, construction conflicts, damaged materials, and quality concerns before they affect the project schedule.
- Perform layout and verify dimensions, elevations, level, plumb, square, alignment, and finished appearance.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and other construction equipment appropriate to the work.
- Complete assigned work efficiently while maintaining J&S standards for quality, safety, productivity, and professionalism.
- Coordinate with project leadership and other trades to maintain workflow and avoid unnecessary delays.
- Protect completed work, maintain an organized work area, and properly care for company tools and equipment.
- Assist with material handling, jobsite organization, and project closeout activities when needed.
- Follow all company policies, project requirements, OSHA standards, and jobsite safety procedures.
- Represent J&S professionally when interacting with owners, customers, inspectors, subcontractors, and fellow employees.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of hands-on commercial construction experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience performing skilled work on commercial construction projects.
- Ability to complete construction assignments independently with limited supervision.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial construction methods, materials, tools, terminology, and sequencing.
- Ability to read and work from commercial blueprints, plans, specifications, and construction details.
- Experience in several of the following areas:
- Wood or metal framing
- Drywall installation and repair
- Commercial doors, frames, and hardware
- Acoustical ceilings
- Finish carpentry and trim
- Casework and fixture installation
- Exterior siding and building components
- Concrete forming or minor concrete work
- Commercial renovation and demolition
- Punch-list and project closeout work
- Ability to accurately perform construction layout, measurements, and material calculations.
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety requirements and safe tool operation.
- Ability to recognize problems, evaluate field conditions, and determine practical solutions.
- Proven history of dependable attendance, productivity, and quality workmanship.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a commercial construction team.
- Must have reliable transportation and the ability to report to assigned project locations.
- Must own and maintain a dependable set of personal hand tools appropriate for the position.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record may be required depending on project responsibilities.

Physical and Work Requirements
This position regularly requires the employee to:
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and work in various physical positions for extended periods.
- Work from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and elevated work areas.
- Perform overhead work and repetitive construction tasks.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull construction materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, with heavier team lifts as required.
- Use hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Work indoors and outdoors in changing temperatures and weather conditions.
- Work around dust, noise, uneven surfaces, active equipment, and normal commercial construction hazards.
- Maintain the visual acuity, hearing, balance, coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to perform skilled construction work safely.
