About RLH Inc.
RLH Inc. is a 100% Lakota sister-owned company located on the Rosebud Reservation in south-central South Dakota. Through our three divisions—Rosebud Building Products, RBP Supply, and Rosebud Rental—we provide building materials, government procurement services, and equipment rentals throughout the region.
We're a growing company with fewer than 20 employees that has reached an exciting stage of growth. Until now, ownership has managed all HR and payroll responsibilities internally. As our business continues to grow, we're creating this new position to provide dedicated HR support while allowing leadership to focus on strategic growth, customer relationships, and business development.
While we're not large enough to require a full-time HR department, we're looking for an experienced HR professional who enjoys partnering with a small business and helping build strong, consistent people practices.
The Opportunity
This newly created position will serve as RLH Inc.'s primary HR and payroll resource, working directly with ownership on employee relations, payroll administration, hiring, performance management, and HR compliance.
Because we're a small business, the workload isn't high-volume. Most weeks involve routine HR administration, processing bi-weekly payroll, maintaining employee records, and serving as a resource for managers and employees. Hiring, performance concerns, policy updates, and other personnel matters arise periodically throughout the year rather than on a daily basis.
The position follows a hybrid work arrangement. Much of the administrative work can be completed remotely, but we believe effective HR is built on relationships and visibility. We anticipate regular on-site visits, typically once or twice each month, with additional visits as needed for hiring, employee meetings, training, performance discussions, or other important personnel matters. This role is best suited for a candidate located within reasonable driving distance of Mission, SD, or surrounding communities, with occasional travel required for in-person HR responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Serve as RLH Inc.'s primary HR resource and trusted advisor to ownership.
- Process and administer bi-weekly payroll through Gusto.
- Coordinate onboarding, offboarding, and employee documentation.
- Maintain personnel files, HR records, and required employment documentation.
- Maintain and update employee policies, handbook materials, job descriptions, and HR forms.
- Help ensure compliance with applicable employment laws and HR best practices.
As Needed
- Coordinate recruiting, candidate screening, interviews, hiring, and onboarding when positions become available.
- Support managers with employee coaching, performance concerns, corrective action, and performance improvement plans.
- Conduct employee performance reviews alongside ownership.
- Manage employee relations matters and termination processes when necessary.
- Recommend improvements to HR systems, documentation, and processes as the company continues to grow.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who:
- Has several years of HR generalist experience, preferably supporting small businesses or serving as the primary HR contact for an organization.
- Is comfortable working independently and partnering directly with business owners.
- Exercises exceptional judgment, professionalism, and discretion when handling confidential employee and compensation information.
- Has strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Is familiar with federal employment law; knowledge of South Dakota employment law is preferred.
- Has experience with Gusto or similar payroll and HR software (preferred but not required).
- Is willing to travel to Mission, South Dakota, on a regular basis.
- Appreciates working with a community-based business on tribal land and is interested in learning about the communities we serve.
