Job Summary
Performs assigned duties in the laboratory involving chemical and physical property determinations in support of customer requests:
- Perform sample preparation following general oral or approved written technical instructions and managing normal problems and discrepancies.
- Analyze samples for constituents in various matrices using techniques or instruments that require a moderate level of calibration and/or analytical interpretation. This may include UV/VIS spectrometers, microscopes, IR spectrometers, automated colorimeters, CVAA, FAA, RDE, ion chromatographs, etc.
- Prepare and load routine sequences and operate instruments under normal operating conditions and parameters. Non–regulatory, routine samples may be analyzed using chromatographic or spectrometric techniques. Analyses are performed under the general guidance of an advanced level technician, analytical chemist or supervisor.
- Calculate and evaluate data or final results. Transfer or enter data or results into LIMS. Results are reviewed by technical reviewer for accuracy.
- May operate on a rotating schedule which may include weekend work and night shift. Travels to remote locations to provide customers with support if needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment and assisting in troubleshooting and resolving analytical, quality or productivity issues.
- Train others to prepare samples and operate laboratory equipment.
- Wash and/or cleaning glassware and other laboratory equipment after use.
- Communicate quality and productivity concerns to chemist or supervisor.
- Meet all quality assurance and safety requirements.
- Perform other tasks as instructed my chemist or supervisor.
- May assist chemist or supervisor with drafting technical instructions.
Supervision Received
The senior technician follows general written and/or oral instructions and works independently within the guidelines of established procedures. Results are reviewed for accuracy, reasonableness, and adherence to schedules and quality. Assignments are completed with minimum supervision.
Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic chemistry, laboratory standards, established procedures, and analytical laboratory techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to properly handle / mix chemicals, operate typical laboratory equipment, and troubleshoot.
- Demonstrated ability to perform analytical and statistical calculations.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in planning, QA, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements
- Two year degree laboratory certificate /degree required with two years of laboratory experience or equivalent in related laboratory work experience with demonstrated capabilities.
- Must be willing and medically qualified to sit, stand, pour, and/or lift for long periods of time as well as work rotating shifts and overtime during peak periods.
