The Vehicle Mechanic performs routine and complex maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel and gasoline-powered transit vehicles, support vehicles, and related equipment. This position ensures vehicles are safe, reliable, and meet federal, state, and local standards. Working under the direction of the Fleet Manager.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on transit vehicles per manufacturer and agency standards
- Inspect vehicles, diagnose issues, and document repairs using maintenance software
- Repair brakes, HVAC, and electrical systems
- Operate shop tools and diagnostic equipment safely; maintain a clean and safe workspace
- Provide roadside assistance and emergency repairs when needed
- Read and interpret service manuals, technical diagrams, and repair bulletins
- Support a collaborative team environment and report safety concerns to management
- Serve as back up for vehicle fueling and shelter maintenance
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the vehicle maintenance operation.
- Physically able to lift 50 lbs., work in confined spaces, and handle exposure to fumes, noise, and weather.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- At least three (3) years of experience in heavy-duty truck or automotive repair, preferably in a transit or fleet setting.
- Experience reading and interpreting service manuals, schematics, and parts catalogs.
- Familiarity with vehicle maintenance tracking software is preferred.
- Ability to provide and use personally owned tools.
- Must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must successfully complete screenings including drug screen & Level 2 background screening through Florida's Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse and maintain eligibility with the Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA): https://info.flclearinghouse.com/
- ASE Transit Bus Technician Certification preferred.
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification preferred.
- Valid Florida CDL (Class B) preferred
