Property & Evidence Custodian

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of clerical, technical or administrative work in storage, accountability, receipting, preservation, safeguarding, disposition and administering of evidence and property.
SUPERVISION:
The property & Evidence Custodian reports to the assigned Police Sergeant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Must be at work timely in accordance with city personnel policy and properly dressed.
Ensure proper storage, accountability, receipting, preservation, disposition & administering of evidence and property.
Accepts, records and maintains record system and chain of custody of all physical evidence and property taken into custody by the police department.
Disposes of evidence or lost/found property by the return to owner, destruction or auction upon case clearance, following State and local rules and regulations regarding property disposition
Maintains proper records and files on the disposition of all property/evidence.
Maintains laboratory supplies, Prepares and submits reports & evidence to OSBI
Testifies in court as required.
Must be able to follow best practice health & safety procedures.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Recommends improvements to equipment and facilities as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
SKILLS:
Safe operation of small tools and equipment such as: drills, ladders, computer and software, vehicle, lift assist devices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently required to sit, talk or hear.
Occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and or smell.
Must frequently lift and/or move more than 25 pounds and up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES: High School graduate or GED equivalent. - Three (3) years of general office, communications or records management experience, at least one of which is related to law enforcement or previous applicable experience.- Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, techniques and equipment; Working knowledge of laboratory techniques; Working knowledge of finger printing techniques and classification systems. Considerable knowledge of evidence and lost/found property maintenance and disposition practices. Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with peers & supervisors.
Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Oklahoma State driver's license without a record of suspension or revocation in any state. Must be insurable with City’s insurance carrier. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories in the past seven (7) years. Must be able to read and write the English language. Must be able to pass a thorough background check including drug screen, polygraph MMPI and Chief’s interview. Must be bondable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally works in outside weather. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderately noisy.
