Senior Tax Accountant
Monteith Wealth, LLC — Bozeman, Montana
$100,000–$135,000 base salary + significant performance/tax-season bonus
Full-time | In-office
Monteith Wealth is looking for an experienced tax professional to join our growing Bozeman tax practice in a senior role.
We are looking for someone who can bring meaningful tax knowledge and experience to the firm from day one. The ideal candidate can independently handle tax-return preparation, work directly with clients, solve problems, and ideally help review the work of other tax preparers.
A CPA or EA is strongly preferred, but it is not an absolute requirement. An experienced tax professional with substantial real-world tax experience may be more valuable to us than someone who simply has the right credentials.
Ultimately, we are hiring for ability, judgment, and client service.
What You'll Do
- Prepare and handle more complex individual income tax returns
- Work directly with clients and take responsibility for servicing many of their day-to-day tax needs
- Review tax-return results and clearly explain them to clients
- Answer client questions and identify when an issue requires additional research or higher-level tax planning
- Prepare business returns depending on experience, including potentially S corporations, partnerships, C corporations, and other entities
- Review your own work thoroughly before completion
- Ideally, perform final review of returns prepared by other tax staff
- Help less-experienced tax professionals identify issues and improve the quality of their work
- Assist with extensions, amended returns, tax notices, estimates, and other tax-related projects
- Potentially assist with bookkeeping and QuickBooks work depending on background
High-level tax planning experience is certainly valuable, but it is not the primary purpose of this position. Our existing senior team can handle sophisticated tax planning. We are looking for someone who can take substantial responsibility for tax preparation and client service, freeing our senior professionals to focus more heavily on planning and complex issues.
What We're Looking For
We would ideally like someone with 5+ years of professional tax experience, although we will consider highly capable candidates with less experience.
We are especially interested in candidates who have:
- Strong individual income tax experience
- Excellent understanding of how tax returns work and the ability to identify questionable results
- Experience working directly with tax clients
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to independently manage work and take responsibility for quality
- Experience preparing business returns
- Experience reviewing returns prepared by other staff
The following are strongly preferred but not necessarily required:
- CPA or EA credential
- 5+ years of public-accounting or professional tax experience
- S corporation and partnership experience
- Final-review experience
- Bookkeeping or QuickBooks experience
- Experience supervising or mentoring other tax professionals
We are willing to be flexible for the right person. We care more about what you can actually do than whether your résumé follows a traditional CPA-firm career path.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $100,000–$135,000, depending on experience, credentials, and capabilities
- Significant tax-season/performance bonus opportunity
- Exceptional historical tax-season bonuses at our firm have reached $40,000. Bonuses vary based on individual contribution and firm performance and are not guaranteed.
- Dollar-for-dollar 401(k) employer match up to 6% of compensation
- Health insurance
- Family health coverage available through our high-deductible health plan
- Employer-funded HSA contribution for employees participating in the qualifying plan
- Generous PTO and substantial offseason flexibility
- Sundays off during tax season
- Considerably lighter offseason workload
- Potential opportunity for future equity ownership for an exceptional long-term contributor
How We Work
We are growing aggressively and work hard during tax season, but we intentionally operate differently from many traditional public accounting firms.
We take Sundays off during tax season and generally want our employees to be able to go home for dinner. Our offseason workload is substantially lighter, and we provide significant flexibility and time off when workloads allow.
We also believe people who contribute substantially to the success of the business should participate substantially in the rewards. That is why we place a strong emphasis on performance compensation and, for the right long-term individual, are open to future equity ownership.
We are looking for someone who wants to become an important part of the firm, build strong relationships with clients, and be rewarded for the value they create.
This position is based in our Bozeman office and is not a remote position.
