Associate Attorney — Criminal Defense

Our 12-attorney law firm in Winston-Salem is seeking a motivated Associate Attorney to join our criminal defense practice. This is an entry-level position — no prior experience required. Recently admitted attorneys are encouraged to apply.
About the Role
As an Associate Attorney in our criminal defense practice, you will work alongside experienced attorneys to represent clients facing criminal charges ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. You'll gain hands-on courtroom experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to build a strong foundation in criminal law from day one.
Responsibilities
- Represent clients in criminal matters, including arraignments, hearings, and trials
- Conduct legal research and draft motions, briefs, and other court filings
- Meet with clients to gather case information and provide legal guidance
- Communicate with prosecutors, judges, and court staff
- Review discovery, police reports, and evidence
- Collaborate with senior attorneys and support staff to build case strategy
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in North Carolina (or eligible for admission/reciprocity)
- Strong research, writing, and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage a caseload with attention to detail and deadlines
- A genuine interest in criminal defense work
- No prior legal experience necessary — we will train the right candidate
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting salary: $60,000/year
