Join our dynamic team as a Traffic Control Supervisor and lead the safe, efficient management of traffic flow on construction sites dedicated to civil infrastructure projects. In this vital role, you will oversee the implementation of traffic control plans, coordinate with construction crews, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Role Responsibilities
- Site Management: Oversee the proper implementation of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) on various highway systems, including high-speed freeways, multi-lane roadways, and local streets.
- Crew Leadership: Direct and supervise Work Zone Installers and Flaggers, ensuring all personnel are operating safely and efficiently.
- Compliance & Inspection: Conduct routine site inspections to verify that all channelizing devices, signs, arrow boards, and lane closures meet NCDOT specifications and Roadway Standard Drawings.
- Safety Training: Ensure all crew members working inside the highway right-of-way have the appropriate, up-to-date training for their specific roles.
- Coordination: Act as the primary point of contact for project managers, NCDOT inspectors, and local authorities on-site.
- Supervise and coordinate traffic control activities across multiple construction projects, ensuring adherence to safety standards and project timelines
- Manage the setup, maintenance, and removal of traffic control devices such as cones, barriers, signage, and flagging equipment
- Oversee the safe operation of heavy equipment including dozers, loaders, backhoes, graders, dump trucks, front loader trucks, and paving machinery
- Conduct regular inspections of work zones to identify hazards and ensure compliance with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations
- Collaborate with construction teams to facilitate utility locating and other site-specific activities while maintaining high safety standards
- Provide training and guidance to traffic control personnel on manual handling, heavy lifting techniques, and proper equipment usage
- Maintain detailed records of daily operations, safety incidents, equipment maintenance, and compliance documentation
Required NCDOT Certifications & Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the strict requirements set by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT):
- NCDOT Work Zone Supervisor Certification: Active certification is required. (Note: If you hold a current supervisor certification from Virginia or South Carolina, NCDOT allows a 1-year reciprocity period before NC re-certification is required.)
- Experience: A strict minimum of 2 years of on-the-job traffic control experience, specifically involving flagging and lane closure installation.
- Prerequisite Certifications: Must hold current NCDOT Flagger and Work Zone Installer certifications.
- Knowledge Base: Deep understanding of the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and NCDOT Division 11 Specifications.
- Driver’s License: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
