Teacher Instructional Assistant (Attendance & Engagement - Grant Funded)
Classification: TCCAPSA, Class IV
Status: 2026/27 school year (180 working days + 9 paid holidays)
Directly Reports: Building Principal
Location: Traverse City High School
The Teacher Instructional Assistant assists in maintaining appropriate classroom activities under the supervision of the classroom teacher.

Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher or monitors whole group while teacher works with individual students or small groups.

Proactively monitor attendance data to identify students at risk of chronic absenteeism.

Conduct outreach to students and families to understand barriers to attendance and provide necessary support.

Implement and document attendance follow-up strategies designed to improve daily student engagement.

Collaborate with school staff and administration to coordinate intervention plans.

Assist and monitor student academic progress.

Serve as a primary point of contact for identified students to foster a sense of belonging and connectedness to the school community.

Provide direct mentorship to students, supporting their social, emotional, and academic well-being.

Facilitate restorative conversations and problem-solving sessions with students to address issues contributing to disengagement.

Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.

Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher.

Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.

Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.

Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, recess, etc.

Assists teacher with bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to date as requested

Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling.

Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of verbal communication with students.

Assists students in the library or media center.

Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make up work, as assigned by the teacher.

Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.

Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.

Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and parents.

Participates in inservice training programs, as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred.

Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.

Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.
The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
