Part-Time Elementary English (ELA) Tutor – Grade 3
We are seeking an experienced, engaging, and patient English Language Arts (ELA) tutor to provide one-on-one instruction for a third-grade student in Dallas.
The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in education or a related field, at least three years of elementary teaching experience, and a strong background in teaching reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Experience with private school students is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging one-on-one ELA lessons aligned with Grade 3 standards.
- Develop customized lesson plans based on the student's strengths and areas for improvement.
- Reinforce school assignments while building independent reading and writing skills.
- Encourage critical thinking through discussion and questioning.
- Provide regular progress updates and recommendations to parents.
The tutor should be comfortable teaching the following skills:
Reading Literature
- Identify characters, setting, plot, and theme.
- Ask and answer comprehension questions using text evidence.
- Determine the lesson or moral of fables and folktales.
- Explain how characters respond to challenges.
- Analyze story structure (beginning, middle, climax, ending).
- Compare different versions of the same story.
- Explain how illustrations contribute to meaning.
- Identify different points of view.
Reading Informational Text
- Identify the main idea and supporting details.
- Use the 5W1H strategy (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How).
- Summarize informational passages.
- Explain cause-and-effect and sequence of events.
- Understand historical, scientific, and procedural texts.
- Use text features (headings, captions, diagrams, charts, glossary, index) to locate information.
- Identify the author's purpose.
- Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues.
Writing
- Write clear opinion pieces supported with reasons.
- Write informative/explanatory paragraphs using facts and examples.
- Write narratives with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Organize ideas using temporal words and transitions.
- Add descriptive details, dialogue, actions, thoughts, and feelings.
- Revise and edit written work for clarity and organization.
Grammar & Language
- Correct sentence structure and punctuation.
- Parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns).
- Capitalization, commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks.
- Subject-verb agreement.
- Verb tenses.
- Paragraph organization.
Vocabulary
- Build academic vocabulary.
- Understand synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
- Use context clues to determine word meaning.
- Apply newly learned vocabulary in speaking and writing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Elementary Education, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of classroom teaching or private tutoring experience with elementary students.
- Experience teaching Grade 3 English Language Arts.
- Teaching certification is preferred but not required.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Strong communication skills with both children and parents.
- Able to create engaging, interactive lessons rather than simply supervising homework.
Schedule
- 1–2 sessions per week
- 60–90 minutes per session
- In-person tutoring in Dallas (75230)
- Flexible weekday afternoons (between 4 and 6:30 pm) or weekends
Compensation
$30–35 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
