This position provides General Education Development (GED) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes for incarcerated individuals at all Escambia County Correctional Facilities. The incumbent will be responsible for teaching various subjects, maintaining accurate attendance records, and preparing students for the GED diploma.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides classroom instruction in basic education subjects, including career planning, social adjustment, and general life skills information
Provides conversational English lessons, ideas, and customs in English to students with limited English proficiency, as needed
Maintains records, including testing, daily inmate work, and attendance
Evaluates and maintains student academic progress
Provides individual tutoring
Performs other duties as assigned
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and at least two years of relevant teaching experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possess or be eligible to apply for a State of Florida Educator’s certificate
Non-certified applicants must obtain a State of Florida Educator’s Certificate within twelve months of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of experience working and/or teaching in correctional facilities or other at-risk populations
Experience working with Aztec Learning System

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and finger and hand dexterity, as well as repetitive motions.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
