Summary Description
Full time Registered Nurse will provide high quality direct and indirect nursing care to consumers, when needed. Will ensure that staff is medication certified, provide infection control information and maintain all medical records as needed and will function as a liaison between staff, families and care managers. Will comply with all medication activities/duties as presented in the policies and procedures set forth by Disabled Persons Action Organization.
Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities of the Relief Registered Nurse include but are not limited to:
- Will be on call at all times (includes answering phone calls, staff questions and documenting required incidents)
- Perform nurse visits when individuals are guests at the Free Standing Respite House
- Medication Administration Records (creation and review of Jefferson County and Lewis County)
-Instructor of the Medication Administration Course for direct care staff members, Maintain a tracking system for staff medication certifications.
- Individual Specific Medication Sheets (creation and review)
-Tracking/Obtaining copies of prescriptions for all medications given to individuals in programming
- Generalized and Individual care plans (creation and review)
- Consumer chart review
- Accident/Incident/Head Tracking/Seizure Report/SCIP Report Documentation
- Medication Error Report Documentation
- General Health/Medical teaching of staff, individuals and parents/caregivers
- Reading/Documentation of Tuberculin tests for consumers
- Attend required trainings as necessary
-Supervisor of Relief / Per Diem Registered Nurse Responsibility
Direct supervisor of the Relief / Per Diem Registered Nurse(s)
Responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and ensuring adequate nursing coverage for weekends, holidays, and on-call periods (including 1 weekend/month per diem coverage)
Provide orientation, training, and ongoing supervision to Relief RN to ensure compliance with DPAO policies, OPWDD regulations, and nursing standards
Review and co-sign all documentation, MAR reviews, incident reports, and medical assessments completed by Relief RN
Serve as primary contact and resource for Relief RN for clinical questions, triage, and emergencies
Ensure continuity of care through effective communication and hand-off of consumer health concerns, medication changes, and pending tasks
Conduct performance feedback and annual competency review for Relief RN in conjunction with Program Management
Education & Experience Requirements
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
Knowledge/Skill: Proficient oral and written communication skills. Ability to practice nursing as described by the following definition: “Assessment and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health alterations”. Ability to utilize the nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to consumers and/or their caregivers and other staff members. Is aware of and follows the principles and practices of working with developmentally disabled individuals and families. Record keeping, independently planning, carrying out plans, awareness of other providers within the community, making decisions, applying sound analytical decision making and various approaches, developing alternative solutions to problems, proper handling of sensitive situations, effectively using time and resources to accomplish goals, working irregular hours when needed and to understand and follow all incident reporting by procedure.
Requirements: The possession of a valid New York State Nursing license is required for this position, as well as a valid driver’s license. Credentials must be produced prior to consideration for this position.
Required Background Checks: Staff Exclusion List Check, MHL 16.34 ABUSE/NEGLECT HISTORY CHECK, NYS Office of Children & Family Services Statewide Central Register Database Check, Criminal Background Check (fingerprinting) done through the NYS Justice Center.
