Electrochemical Engineer
Because this position requires the ability to obtain a security clearance, US Citizenship is mandatory.
Engineering support for electrochemistry, nanoparticle physics, and/or particle/polymer interaction specifically, for the electrochemical etching of silicon for the Protective Technologies Team as an on-site contractor within the Electromagnetic Effects Branch at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland.
Job Description:
Engineering R&D support and services in electrochemistry, nanoparticle physics, and/or particle/polymer interaction. Tasks to involve hands-on processing and fabrication of microstructures and devices using lithography, electroplating, electrochemical etching, sputtering, physical vapor deposition or evaporation, plasma etching, dicing, laser etching, probing, additive manufacturing, and/or wire bonding. Expertise in electrochemical properties of metals and semiconductors will be especially helpful. Work to also involve testing and characterization of devices in complementary laboratories using probe stations, scanning electron microscopes, oscilloscopes, high speed visual and infrared videography, and calorimetry. Will work alongside and collaborate with other electrical engineers, chemists, materials scientists, and experts in the fields of electronics, energy storage, and sensors.
Tasks/Duties/Responsibilities:
- Process development working with both established and novel materials, and development of new geometries, structures, and processing
- Coordinate experimental scheduling and execution of reliability tests with statistically relevant sample numbers under temperature, humidity, shock, and other environmental stresses.
- Support a safe research environment by following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and rules, and developing and recommending new SOPs.
- Generate written reports for internal and external customers, and where appropriate, publish in leading journals and scientific conferences.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Writing/Communication: Documentation of technical results in the form of technical presentations, informal project or status updates, and formally published papers
- Knowledge of Material Fabrication and Preparation: Cleanroom Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) fabrication techniques such as Sputter Deposition, Electron-beam Evaporation, Lithography, Chemical Vapor Deposition, Reactive Ion Etching.
- Materials and Device Characterization such as Nanocalorimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction and Phase Contrast Imaging, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Parallel Plate Rheology, Electrical Probe stations, and/or Particle Size Analysis

Minimum Education/experience requirements (at least one of the following):
1) Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Materials Science plus several years' work experience
2) Masters degree in any of the above fields
3) Doctorate degree in any of the above fields
Competitive pay commensurate with education and experience.
The selected candidate will be an employee of General Technical Services LLC (GTS).
US citizenship is mandatory (to obtain the required security clearance). There may be occasional travel. GTS offers company-funded educational support for job-related training.
