The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while promoting economic development and preserving New Mexico's environment. The Financial Control Division (FCD) is responsible for ascertaining the legality and authorization of proposed expenditures, maintaining financial records, and ensuring the availability of adequate budgetary resources prior to the commitment of NMDOT restricted funds.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The position will pre-audit financial transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The position will ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely audits of financial transactions while maintaining compliance of NMDOT and Department of Finance and Administration's (DFA) rules and regulations, assuring proper posting of expenditures. This position will assist in the oversight of vendor relations for the department, reviewing W-9 submissions for accuracy and legitimacy, ensuring rules and regulations are followed. Position will provide guidance to NMDOT staff on financial policies and procedures as well as any additional duties assigned.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Provide a high level of expertise in accounting, evaluation, and monitoring of vendor payments, assuring New Mexico Department of Transportation Financial Control Unit and Department of Finance and Administration audit requirements are met upon payment approval.
- Analyze and make correcting recommendations to the departments financial staff.
- Perform in depth review of financial data using critical thinking skills in combination with advanced excel functions.

Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or Equivalency and one (1) year of experience in bill collection, bookkeeping, office administration, auditing, accounting, and/or finance. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver¿s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Working conditions also include working with faxes, copiers, and printers. Must be able to lift 25Ibs. Some travel may be required.
